Apr. 14th, 2018 11:49 amMy driving lesson went... Okay!
After the regular lesson, we did a trial run of the actual test. Verdict: 55 points (need under 75 to pass). Need to practice steering more smoothly + making sure to never touch the curb during parallel parking. Need to CHILL THE FUCK OUT because the dude was like "...You are really nervous". Sorry m8, can't do anything about that, anxiety is a thing and my brain is a tosser. But, uh, I dunno. Maybe I can just work on getting a good night's sleep before the test.
I'm going to schedule one (1) more brush-up lesson, and then I'M GOING TO DO IT. I'M GOING TO SCHEDULE THE TEST.
- Stone Creek area is like 90% construction zone due to wildfire rebuilding. Need to be 30 kph BEFORE you enter that area. Ends after the last house (when you are heading in the direction of Timmy's)
-CHECK first and then SIGNAL. Not the other way around.
- Full stop should be: stop, COUNT TO THREE, and then go. Not just stop and then go.
- Parallel in the test vehicles is: SIGNAL at approach. Line up, turn wheels to the right once, roll to 45 degrees. PAUSE. Straighten (one revolution to left). Roll back a bit until the extra right-hand mirror indicates it's close enough. PAUSE. Full rotation to the left, roll in, DO NOT LET IT TOUCH THE CURB. I REPEAT, DO NOT. ...And then if there is plenty of space in front, pull up a bit. Brake + parking break. REMEMBER that this vehicle is like half the size of your home vehicle, you have room to do all of this with the precise amount of rotations.
- Downhill parking: go in, turn wheels RIGHT (toward curb), put in NEUTRAL, roll gently. When exiting, gently reverse a little bit, straighten your wheels out, then proceed to check + signal + exit to the left.
- Uphill parking: go in, turn wheels LEFT, park. When exiting, check + signal + exit.
- That right turn by the Timmy's has -> arrows in the right lane that are practically invisible. Signal + move to left lane ASAP because the right lane turns into, like, a parking aisle after a bit.
- That one four-way stop in Stone Creek area behind the Starbucks is totally whack. If you are pointing uphill and turning LEFT, you have to go forward more than usual before turning because it is three lanes (2 regular + turning lane) and THEN the lane you are turning into.
- When heading down from the registry toward Extra Foods + bus stop: go through intersection, THEN signal left, THEN change lanes. If you have to stop, do so. DO NOT PANIC, the lane ends but like... everyone is aware that this is a problem with this particular transit stop. So.
- The entry/exit for the registry is a pain in the ass, go through it SLOWLY because you need to make a ton of right + left turns in a small space, ugh.
- The turning lane in front of the registry is very difficult + dangerous, WATCH OUT for incoming/outgoing cars when you are entering/exiting.
- When instructor tells you to change lanes: check first. If there is a while before the actual turn, wait until it's pretty close BEFORE signaling. Don't signal too soon.
- When doing the test, Do Not Ask where they want you to go, they will tell you AND give adequate time for turning (unlike certain individuals you have practiced with).
- When reversing from straight parking, signal for the direction your ass is pointing, not the direction you want the vehicle to actually go once you're finished reversing. EX: If you're reversing to turn left, signal for the right, because the rear end is turning toward the right.
- Always pull out straight from straight parking. Remember, the driving school vehicle is small and you have plenty of room to do this.
- Instructor's recommended speed for turning: LEFT is 15-20KPH, RIGHT is like 10-15.
- High schools are not considered School Zone unless they are attached to an elementary school [And none of the ones in Timberlea are]. SO school zone speed is not required; just regular caution as one would use in any high-pedestrian area.
- Schedule the test for a weekend so you won't need to be fussed about school zone stuff.
...I'm sure there's a ton of other fiddly stuff I'm forgetting. OH WELL at least I'm... theoretically... ready to schedule a test.

Date: 2018-04-14 07:18 pm (UTC)Also, for uphill parking, I learned to turn the wheels left if there was a curb but right if there wasn't a curb, the idea being that if there was a curb turning the tires left would force them to wedge against the curb if the vehicle rolled, but turning them right but if there wasn't a curb meant that if the vehicle rolled it would roll off the road rather than onto it.
