So, I spent New Year's Eve binge-watching Vatican Miracle Examiner. (FINALLY. After, like, months of meaning to watch it, since my pal Folie liked it so much, but anyway...)
Hoo boy. Those who said VME is the spiritual successor to Weiss Kreuz were right. Not due to similarity of premise - because they don't have much in common in that way at all - but due to the fact that both series are completely bonkers. Like, mystery plots + that certain kind of crack played serious - somehow it just hits the right note. ...Actually, putting it that way, it reminds me of Herge's Tintin comics as well. Gives the same kind of feeling.
Anyway. It's ridiculous and fun and I'm glad I finally got around to watching it. :D
Somehow I came out of this with the vague desire for Julia -> Hiraga or Hiraga -> Julia or whatever and I don't know what to do with this feeling.
(Probably at least half of this is because JULIA IS SO PRETTY, but holy shit dude has issues, plz get him away from darling Hiraga, but then again the episode 12 stuff, well... seriously though Julia is an untrustworthy nutjob)
(A very pretty nutjob)
(Who occasionally does kind and compassionate things but HOO BOY... dude....)
Also I really love Hiraga's weird friendship with Lauren. I really really love it a lot. They're just so... they come at life from very different directions, but they dovetail together really well.
Though that scene makes me so laugh... when Lauren asks about Roberto and then you can just SEE that after Hiraga starts talking Lauren is thinking "Oh fuck, why did I ask that, now Hiraga isn't going to stop talking about him for the next four hours".
My main thought on Hiraga and Roberto is that I want them to hug. A lot. I don't even know what I want re: shipping, but like, I just love how they relate to one another, I love how domestic they are, they're just... so cute... way too cute. [/shoves them together]
I mean - their relationship in canon is already so excellent, I can hardly think of anything I would want to add to it (aside from copious amounts of hugs). They're just [/CHEFKISS] They're lovely.
It was never mentioned in the series where Roberto is from in Italy, and now I must know (perhaps it's in some of the non-anime materials) PLEASE SAY HE IS A NORTHERNER (shhhh yuu)
But my MAIN takeaway from all of this is that this is a perfect series if you like to write casefic. UNFORTUNATELY I SUCK AT CASEFIC. I sure do like to read it but UNFORTUNATELY the fic fandom is tiny. Or at least the English side is, idk about the JP side. Ah, well.
It occurs to me that since I currently have no commitments I could, theoretically, read every single VME story uploaded to Ao3. HMMM.
ALSO the amount of times I misread the title of this series as "Vatican Medical Examiner" makes me wish/hope that some kind of medical examiner AU exists. To Be Quite Honest it wouldn't be that much departure from the story as-is, considering how many people tend to get murdered whenever Roberto and Hiraga are in the area, leading to them investigating the deaths anyway....
Also, vague desires for some kind of crossover with The Exorcist. Or something. Or, well, pick any horror canon involving demons + exorcisms, but The Exorcist is on my mind because apparently the new TV series is really good and also has M/M (I should watch this eventually really). UHH... yes.
