I find it hard to knit unless I'm watching something, soooo I decided to take the time to watch all the Jurassic Park films, since I haven't seen the most recent two of them.

Main thoughts on Jurassic World: After what I'd seen people saying about it, I was expecting something a whole lot worse. As it is, it was just kind of underwhelming; not as bad as I'd feared. The main issues that I had was that a lot of stuff with the raptors was a little ridiculous and/or over the top (including the whole training bit) and the idea that the park had been open for that long without a major incident is... pfft, yeah right, pull the other one. And then there's the stuff that people had warned me about, 'course. Still, not too bad, or at least not as bad as I had expected.

Rather glad that I saved the first for last - even after almost 25 years, the original Jurassic Park is still the best. Love that movie. Such an excellent use of practical effects and... well, it's just a really good film.

Apparently I never got over that childhood crush on Dr Alan Grant. He's just so dashing! "Sort of like Indiana Jones, but a million times cooler" is the phrasing that comes to mind... (Is it because of the hat? Maybe it's the hat. I dunno.)

Also, I find it really cool that (apparently) the portrayal of the character was inspired by a Canadian palaeontologist, Dr Philip Currie, who has done all sorts of cool work involving theories of avian descent and so on. ...I met him once. A long time ago. He was giving a talk in my town. I brought a copy of his book with me and he autographed it and I was too nervous to really say much, heh. I was a kid at the time, so I still thought that palaeonology was a possibility in my future, but... ah, well. Things turned out differently than I hoped, but that doesn't mean I can't have fun reading about it. (I should do that, actually - it's been ages since I did any reading up, and I have no idea what discoveries have been made recently. I'm over a decade out of date on the subject.)

Anyway, apparently there's going to be another Jurassic Park film coming out next year - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom which... well, they sure are running with this series as far as they can, aren't they. And to my disappointment, Sam Neill won't be returning as Dr. Grant in this one; though Jeff Goldblum will be coming back as Dr Ian Malcolm, so that's kind of cool... I never was a huge fan of the "rockstar celebrity mathematician" (haha, what) but it's neat to see actors from the original show up again. I even was happy to see B D Wong show up again as Dr Wu in Jurassic World, even though I wouldn't exactly call him one of the good guys.

It's only just now that I remember there was a novel version of The Lost World - I should read that one; compare it to the original, see how different it is. The novel version of Jurassic Park is substantially different from the film version, partly by necessity, but Michael Crichton wrote the initial version of the screenplay, and I think that might (possibly) have contributed to the fact that even though it's an adaptation, it's a very good one. Or at least, it's good in the sense that it's a good movie based on a book; not necessarily a good 1:1 film portrayal of the story in the novel. An attempt to do a more "faithful" adaptation probably wouldn't have as good a result as what we actually got.

...Well, that's a whole lot of wordvomit. Hi, I like dinosaurs.
