yuuagoOkay, so, the second extra chapter for Year in Hereafter is up, and man, did reading that ever make my day.
The extra chapter is Patreon-exclusive; IIRC the first one was available as a separate downloadable purchase, but that is not the case with this one. Later, it'll be in the print version of collection 2 - which won't be available until late 2018, probably.
Anyway, this one is set shortly after Veeti wakes up in Rautiola.
It's also totally adorable, and shippy as hell. Like, seriously, if I didn't ship Jaakko/Veeti already, I'd sure be shipping it now. Ffffffffu.
But before I start flailing about that, I'll just jot down some other thoughts -
- Veeti + sugar = adorable. If anyone was wondering what the "10 lumps of sugar" in some of my exchange letters came from, well, it was from this (or rather, from previews for this). That's what Veeti asks Jaakko to put in his coffee. ...One would hope he normally doesn't take that much sugar in it, only when he's feeling unwell/exhausted.... (...Then again, I used to take my coffee as sugary sludge too, so I really am in no position to judge.) But ahhh, the way his eyes light up in that sweet shop...! So cute. <3
- Speaking of coffee, apparently they have coffee in Kalevala. For some reason, my first impression was that they wouldn't, which was why they were having tea in that one fic I wrote. (After all, you can make tea out of anything - or rather, "tea"... herbal leaf-water... whatever.) Anyway, I guess I'll have to make note of this. Coffee exists! xD
- We get a tiny hint at Jaakko's backstory here. Not much - just a tiny hint - but it's more than we had before, and it made me remember that at this point we really don't know much about him at all. (Well, we'll get to know him better eventually, probably. And I'm looking forward to it!) Even if it's only a tiny bit, it's enough to chew on... I kind of want to do something with it, but I have no idea what. (And now I need to go back and re-read every single scene where he and Sulo interact, with this new information in mind.)
- Veeti sure isn't all that bothered about being in Kalevala. (Unlike Mika and his... multiple sobbing sessions.) It re-frames his current situation in an interesting way, something I hadn't considered much, and... I'm going to need to give it some thought.
- Confirmation that Veeti has been reading the books stacked over the fireplace. :D The thought that he would is something that I'd stuffed into a WIP, so I'm delighted that the subject actually came up.
- Jaakko might be a bit rough around the edges, but he sure is a softy. A big, fluffy, scruffy softy. I mean we already kind of knew this, but this short comic just confirms it all over again....
Aaanyway. So. Other than that, well, what can I say? Jaakko and Veeti's interaction here is just... it's lovely. They get along pretty well, all things considered; the way things are going, it's pretty clear they're going to Be Friends, and that makes my heart sing. Sweeties. <3
To be quite honest, it would have made me happy to see them interacting in any capacity at all, but this is just an absolute gift. It's so many things that I love all wrapped in one cute package. The whole "You need some fresh air" thing... the sweets... the way Jaakko indulges him (and leaves with his pockets far lighter than expected)... the bit with the books... sharing candies and that smile at the end, oh my. <3

Mm, so. There's enough here that I might be able to incorporate it into a current wip, or use it as the base for a story somehow... Or maybe I'll just re-read it a million times, because it might be short, but it made me so happy. <3 Yes.
