I saw the northern lights while I was out walking this evening. It was very faint - streetlamps made visibility less-than-awesome - but it was there.

Nice.

...I kind of wish it hadn't been dark enough to see them (I miss having sunlight for my evening walks!) but, well, we can't have everything. ;p

heh, so people will complain even about the northern lights. Figures, when you're tired of the dark and cold, but I still want to see them so much. I can't imagine getting tired of them. How many times have you seen them?

Hmm, I haven't seen them that many times. Maybe about five occasions that I can actually remember? But then again, I don't usually look for them. When I'm out at a time they'd be out, I'm generally too busy doing whatever I'm doing to bother looking up.

So it's not like you notice the light is different and *have* to look up? Huh.

Was it really magical the first time you saw them? Or any of the other times? :D

That's right. See, since I'm in the city, even when the lights are really bright, they won't be immediately noticeable, because the streetlamps are always brighter than they are - the aurora is never bright enough for me to notice them from a change in light alone. It's only if I happen to glance up at the right time that I'll see they're there (or... if I check the aurora forecast, I guess, but I never remember to). It'd be different if I were living outside the city.

There was this time last winter, when I saw them while I was... either walking to or from work, I can't remember. It was really special, mostly because I was alone, so I got to appreciate it properly without having annoying people around me. Plus, it was super strong that day - I could actually see the shape of them and see how they moved. Usually the lamps fade them so much that they just look like a weak wash of colour.

The aurora australis is supposed to be big tonight - I can't see it from where I live, but you can catch it sometimes down by the coast. Wow.

We start summer time this weekend and it's going to kill me, getting up an hour earlier. I haaaate summer time, even if it means more light in the evenings.

Ew, summer. GODSPEED. I know it's a lot less... tolerable... for you guys than it is here.
