Soooo, today was the first Eurovision semifinal, and unlike some previous years, I was actually able to listen to it while at work. That was nice.

Canada is geoblocked, which is a bummer. But I was able to watch it via SVT's stream, so that's all right. BLESS YOU, SWEDEN.

Found most of the acts underwhelming, though. Won't be surprised if most of them grow on me over time, but right now I'm feeling very "eh" overall. I wonder if the next one will be better. I haven't listened to any of them, so I have no idea what's coming up.

I wasn't in love with the song Iceland sent (Paper by Svala) but then when I got home, I somehow ended up listening to it on loop for over an hour, so... I suppose I liked it more than I initially thought. Pity it didn't make it through.

WELL... that's rather lukewarm, isn't it. Still excited for the final, though, as always.

Yay for being able to listen to the Eurovision semifinal!

I'm not too impressed with this semi either. My two favourites (Estonia and Belarus) are in the next one tomorrow.

As for this semi, I agree with you that Iceland was better than I initially thought. I also liked Slovenia, but I guess that's just me and my weakness for Slavic-style ballads. Oh, and Finland was quite nice as well.

What is it about Portugal, though? Everyone seems to love it... everyone except me, that is. It's not that I hate it or anything, but it's just mildly okay, maybe a bit boring.

Portugal's entry is very... I don't even KNOW. Like, it's very pretty - reminds me of old-time Hollywood - and I'd probably love it in other contexts (movie soundtrack!!). But it REALLY isn't the kind of thing I tune in to Eurovision for. So it kind of surprises me to hear that it's so loved.

AH WELL, if it's that popular, maybe that'll lead to more not-English entries next year....

Well, that is a very good point. More non-English songs would be great. I wish they could just get rid of the stupid free language rule. Eurovision used to be much more interesting when the songs had to be in national languages.
