Reading Wednesday
Jun. 22nd, 2016 09:09 pmFinished reading: Born With a Tooth by Joseph Boyden. I've read and loved Joseph Boyden's work before, so no surprise that I liked this. This one, it's a collection of short stories, and it's really, really good. I could hardly put it down.
The collection is divided into four parts, each with a separate theme. As for the individual stories, it's hard to pick a favourite... Hmm, probably one of the following: "Painted Tongue", "Bearwalker", "Kumamuk", and... pretty much the entire section titled North | Home, that is "Legless Joe versus Black Robe", "Gasoline", "God's Children", and "Old Man" - this section all ties together very clearly, and it's impossible to properly appreciate an individual story without reading the others. Home is a good title for that particular cycle, considering how it deals with home and family and being rooted and how everything ties together.
I will note, though, that even though this collection is amazing, it's probably best to avoid reading it if you're already feeling down. A lot of the stories deal with racism and violence, which is typical of Boyden's work.
In addition to that, for example, "Painted Tongue" is a really great story, but in it the central character witnesses a homophobia-motivated murder, and I kind of wish I had not read it so soon after Orlando.
Still, I do suggest reading this collection - but keep the above in mind.
Currently reading: Him Standing by Richard Wagamese, in which an Ojibwe artist is commissioned to carve a spirit mask. After that, he receives strange dreams, and even stranger things start happening.... This one is a quick read (I might even finish it tonight, even though I started it today) and so far it seems a bit of a horror novel, heh. And that is just fine by me, because you all know that I love horror novels. While I can't say for sure if it ends as awesome as it starts, because I haven't finished it yet, it's a really enjoyable read so far and I suggest giving it a try if the summary sounds interesting. The ebook version is inexpensive.
Reading next: I have no idea. I went on an ebook binge shortly after I got back from Edmonton, but I can't remember what I bought, aside from the novels above. Fffff maybe I should read... whatever it was... before I buy any more books. ;p
