Still reading through Stand Still, Stay Silent. Still loving it. Chapter 2 is pretty short, and we don't get a whole lot of developments here, but there are still plenty of things for me to get excited about. Mainly, character interaction, and finding out a little bit more about the mission to the Silent World.
I'm really eager to get to know more about the mission, but it's good that we're taking it slowly. This chapter feels like a bit of a breather, in some ways, because the previous chapter had so much going on with the travel and introducing our three weirdos and so on. This chapter doesn't really introduce anybody new, as far as major characters go, and I feel that's a good thing, because it gives us an opportunity to get to spend time with them a bit more, and get to know them a bit more.
I also appreciate lingering in Mora. The more time the characters spend here, the more obvious that it's quite a bit different from the situation in Finland. It's a much safer area, the technology is more developed, it's thriving. The contrast makes it clear just to what extent Finland is on the outskirts of civilization.
Some chapter highlights: Okay, firstly, I love the opening illustration; typical for Sundberg's stuff, it's so pretty! And I love the little detail of Lalli holding onto Tuuri's coat, pff, so cute.
Emil, did you really think that you could get away with bringing all those explosives into Mora without a permit?! (Fff his expression when he's all, "Yeeeeess?" What a snot, I love it.)
Lalli does not understand rolling floors but to be honest, they freak me out too, I feel ya' Lalli.
Tuuri's cutiepie face when she sees that horse, ahhhh!!
Probably the highest point in the chapter for me: Emil fixing Lalli's hair. Oh my god, SO CUTE. "Mind your hair, you look like a bum!" And the best part about it is - Lalli doesn't speak Swedish, so he has absolutely no idea what Emil is saying. It shows. It's adorable. ... I think I ship it based on this scene, and the language barrier just makes it even better.
On a less happy note, I found this page incredibly chilling: Tuuri explaining trade routes and outbreaks. Just, the image of the town name being crossed off, and the view of it after, that there isn't only one removed, but several... it's a quiet page with a lot of impact.
Look, Emil getting mobbed by kids! And more cuteness with kids! And LOOK AT THAT TOP PANEL, oh my god, Emil being affectionate toward his little cousins is so adorable. I like that even though he's an egotistical snoot, he also has a sweet side, too.
AHH that family from the prologue! Well, if I'm to take an impression of it, they probably weathered the apocalypse okay. ;)
Lalli won't have any of your shit, Emil. Also, he looks like a cat, and that's adorable. SERIOUSLY though, AHH this page pushes all of my language barrier buttons, poor Tuuri having to translate for them. xD
And then we learn that "book salvation" is part of their mission. This is actually something that I had been wondering about! And something that I had hoped to see! And it makes me so happy that it's actually part of it! Because there was the whole thing about wanting to rediscover knowledge, and that includes literature. True, a lot of the motivation for the organizers is economical, but I think that Tuuri will be far more concerned with the importance of information and stories. I expect she'll take up that part of the mission with gusto.
Anyway, verdict: I enjoyed what we saw, and there were a lot of things that I liked, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes next. Not all of the main adventurers have been introduced yet, and I really want to meet them!
