Avengers: Age of Ultron
May. 2nd, 2015 03:27 pmBack from watching The Avengers: Age of Ultron. A general impression: It wasn't my favourite Marvel film, but it was all right! Black Widow was cool. I enjoyed the new characters. Steve needs to continue wearing tight shirts.
I know nothing about the comics, and am not in the fandom, so... When it comes to these movies, I tend to have a much looser outlook than people who are far bigger fans of it than I am.
I AM SO BUTTHURT ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED TO PIETRO, OH MY GOD. I liked him! And Wanda! And I liked their whole sibling thing they had going! It was touching how much they cared so much about each other! GODDAMNIT WHY DID PIETRO HAVE TO KICK THE BUCKET. I mean yes, he was very heroic, which I'm glad for, and it gave Wanda an extra kick, but it sucks and now Wanda has to be without her brother and that's awful.
Then again, she seemed to rely on him a lot, so being forcibly separated from him will probably cause her to develop more as her own person. So, that's good. I like her a lot. (It's still sad though, he was the only family she has...)
Black Widow didn't make an impression on me in the first Avengers film, but I liked her a lot here. I think she might have had more scenes in this film, possibly? I can't remember the other one very well. Anyway, it was nice to see her do cool shit, and it was nice to get a bit more insight into how her past affected her, and whatnot. I haven't seen Winter Soldier, and wasn't planning to; maybe I should, since she's in it. Gal needs her own movie, though.
Ditto for Hawkeye - it was nice to actually see more of his personality, considering he spent a huge chunk of the first Avengers film being mind-controlled.
I am annoyed that a lot of this took place in a made-up country. This is something that bothers me in other series, as well (Tintin comics, for example). I take the approach of - all or nothing. Either use real places, or use all fictional-only places. Don't mix both. In the world of the Avengers, places like the USA, Russia, Germany, Norway, South Korea, those all exist. But apparently countries in the Balkans are all interchangeable? Screw that. I hate that attitude. Instead of setting it in "Sokovia", there's no reason it couldn't be set in Serbia or Bulgaria or wherever. Especially since Sokovia is not a country that exists in the comic books; it's film-only.
