So, I watched Kal Ho Naa Ho. Been meaning to do it for ages. Good gods, I didn't expect to cry buckets of tears on account of this movie. "Oh, it's a romantic comedy, there probably won't be any sad parts" WELL... NOT SO MUCH.

Then again, I am a delicate flower who cries at the drop of a hat, so. There we are.

This is only the second Bollywood film I've ever seen; the first was the 2002 Devdas. Shah Rukh Khan was in both of these films, but I prefer him in Kal Ho Naa Ho - mostly because I found his character a lot more tolerable. (I wanted to slap Devdas multiple times throughout the course of that film. Not so with Aman in KHNH; mostly I just wanted to hug him.) As far as actors go, though, I might need to check out some of Saif Ali Khan's other films, because I liked his character, Rohit, so much.

Normally love triangles are a "no thanks" for me, but there was enough going on in the film aside from that to keep me interested. And also that there was a legitimate reason for things to be complicated - though it took me a while to catch on to that; I'm not sure if I'm slow on the uptake or what, but regardless, it worked for me anyway.

I loved Aman and Rohit's friendship - it isn't what I expected, but oh man, what a pair of dorks. And all the familial relationships going on in this movie, especially everything going on between Naina and her mother and grandmother - I love the way it's portrayed as, things are messy and complicated, and life can throw so much sadness at you, but generally, everything can turn out okay in the end. (Well... Not quite everything. Not exactly. But most things.)

Years and years ago, a friend sent me the MP3s for two songs: Dola Re Dola from Devdas, and Maahi Ve from Kal Ho Naa Ho. So, it was nice to finally have seen both of those movies. The songs are great on their own, but they're even better with the visuals/context. "Dola Re Dola" is visually fantastic, but I love the bright and happy tone in "Maahi Ve" (not to mention the part during the dance when Rohit and Aman end up passed into other's arms, then just shrug and continue the waltz together, pff. Dorks)
