Gentlemen Bastards + Metalizer
Jan. 21st, 2015 05:45 pmNearly finished reading Scott Lynch's Red Seas Under Red Skies. I've found it very satisfying, but I have no idea how it's going to get wrapped up with the amount that I still have left to read... I hope that won't be left to the next book. That'd be really disappointing.
But anyhow, this novel had a good deal of swashbuckling and y'know, sometimes that's exactly what I want. Also, as far as prominent secondary characters go, Captain Zamira Drakasha combines so many character types that I love - she's a mix of competent leader + loving-but-firm mother + takes-no-shit pirate. It's awesome! Anyway, if you like that kind of character, this novel might be worth a read, though if you don't read The Lies of Locke Lamora first (which she isn't in) you might be a bit confused about the backstory of the main duo.
Speaking of Locke and Jean, not sure how I feel about them really. I think I care less about them, exactly, than I do about the fun and ridiculous and bloody situations that they manage to con themselves into and out of. I think a re-read of the first book is in order; might change how I feel, at least a bit.
Probably going to take a break before I read or re-read any more of the series, though. I find that if I don't space things, everything runs together, no matter what I'm reading or who the author is or what the subject is.
Anyway! I received Sabaton's Metalizer album in the mail today. Right now I'm far too exhausted to even listen to it, but I'm really happy that I have it. This is the last album that I needed in my collection. Other than that, all that's left is stuff like World War Live: Battle of the Baltic Sea. And while I don't normally buy live albums... I think I'll get that one, eventually. Sabaton is damn good in their live recordings - and sometimes even better than the straight albums, like with "Rise of Evil", which is better live than in the studio recording on Attero Dominatus.
... Which I still need to do a proper review of, come to think of it. Hm. Though I'm still digesting some of my feelings on it. Might need to do some research too, just to match up dates and such.
As for Metalizer - the only song on it that I'm familiar with is "7734", because it was remade for Heroes. I'm giving the Metalizer version a listen now and... it seems like it has a much weaker sound than the remade version. Sure, it's been 7 years since Metalizer was released, but plenty of Sabaton's early songs have a lot of power behind them ("Attero Dominatus", "Primo Victoria", etc). But this upload isn't so great - I'm going to have to wait to form my opinion on that until I get a chance to rip it and listen to it properly. There are others on the album that I really want to listen to ("Burn Your Crosses"!!!) but that'll have to wait too.
This week is going relatively well - and it's even been pretty warm! - but I can't lie, I'm definitely waiting for the weekend. So many things to do...!
