COLD. And movies.
Jan. 11th, 2015 04:26 pmMuch like yesterday, it was too cold to go outside today. But, unlike yesterday, I did the smart thing and stayed in. (I really can't continue to do that though - I mean really, if I stayed inside every time the thermometer dropped below -25C, I would never be able to go outside in the winter.)
Finished watching The Scarlet and the Black (1983) today. I'd received it for Christmas, but took my time with getting around to it because I really do need to be in a certain mindset to watch WWII films.
It's very good, though; it's a film about Hugh O'Flahtery, a priest of the Vatican who helped save tons of escaped allied POWs through a secret network. Gregory Peck plays O'Flahtery in this, and of course he's amazing - I haven't seen nearly as many of his films as I'd like, but of the ones I've seen he's been so good in all of them....
Somehow, the portrayal of Colonel Kappler vs O'Flahtery in this reminds me a bit of Les Miserables, the whole Javert vs Valjean cat-and-mouse game; but I'm not sure if it's intentional. Probably not.
I've come to appreciate older war films - not limited to WWII, but in general. There is the unfortunate fact that while I find this kind of subject interesting, I have a lot of trouble stomaching violence, and this means that modern films are not necessarily something I can easily handle - though I do try every now and then.
Anyhow, it's worth watching if you enjoy historical films in general, or if you like Gregory Peck, or if you're interested in watching films with WWII settings that aren't about the Holocaust. ... I really should seek out more like that, because it's what I prefer, and the only one that I can think of offhand is this one and Flame and Citron, which is about the Danish Resistance. Obviously there must be more, I just haven't seen them.
