SO I went to see Pacific Rim this afternoon. I usually don't get a chance to see films in cinema because the place isn't close to my house and my parents are weird about me doing things in the evening alone. But a couple days ago I was like FUCK IT, I don't want to wait until this one is public released, so I looked up times and whaddayaknow, there was a matinee showing. 8)

... I'll probably be doing this more frequently from now on, just because I love going to the movies, and I actually do enjoy going by myself. (Pretty much the only people I could go with are my parents, and watching anything with them is annoying. Not to mention that we really don't like the same things).

Anyway, I went in hoping for a fun summer action movie with monsters and mechs, and... basically received exactly that!

One of the things that I loved was the whole "people from all over the world coming together to save the world" thing. Even if the character-cast wasn't as broad as I would like, and even if a lot of the non-American characters that we did have didn't get a lot of screentime, the fact that it was there, and the fact that the main battle didn't take place in America helped a lot, as far as I'm concerned.

Also, the part that did take place in the US... not gonna' lie, I do like the direction they went there, too. So frequently when it comes to action (and/or monster) stuff set in the US, it's in the lower 48, and if mass destruction is involved then it's almost always some big huge city. I loved that most of the US stuff took place in buttfuck nowhere, Alaska, instead. It's just nice to see something a little bit different every now and then. And I won't lie that I'm biased toward northern locations due to living in the north myself (even if I'm a good bit further south than Alaska and not in the US, of course).

Kind've disappointed that there was nothing with Canada during the bits where there was mention of locations that had been attacked, though. I want some huge-ass kaiju attacking Vancouver, please and thanks.

I loved the character designs for the Russian pilots (or is that the term? It feels weird using the term character design for live-action stuff, but). They had such a small part but they looked cool and the little that we did see of them made me like them. (Also, was I seeing things, or did Sasha go into battle wearing red lipstick? Hot damn, what a gal. Er, the chick's name is Sasha, right?) I think it was partly their jaeger that make me like them, too... Cherno Alpha is a fucking tank, a heavy-duty no-nonsense war machine, and something about that really appeals to me. ...Also I'm just checking the wiki and apparently the Russian duo are married? I had the impression that they were brother and sister, since they look sort of alike. Huh. Somehow, that makes me like them even more; I love battle couples. 8)

Anyway. I wish there had been a little more of them, and also of the Chinese team, but when I think about it I'm not sure there would've been a way to do that without making the movie longer, which isn't what I'd want - the length was just right - or cutting something out. And I can't really think of anything that I would want to cut out. That Australian kid was kind of a dickwad but I can't think of a way to snip part of his role without everything else suffering. Oh, well. This is what fanfiction is for. Maybe if I'm lucky there'll be something out there building up a pre-film story for the Russian pilots.

Also-also I didn't realize that Mako actually does have those blue streaks in her hair, I thought they were some kind of fanon thing or fanart quirk or something, but it turns out she actually DOES and ahhhh it's so cute! And man, I really love her, she's really cool - and like, I don't know, the whole thing about wanting to be a pilot, and eventually getting to do so, and managing to be competent in that role that she dreamed of even if it didn't go perfectly at first... I like that.

I heard some whispering of a sequel, and to be honest I'm kind of like NOOOO. I enjoyed the ending, I think it was a good ending. I like the thought of the threat being over, things being fixed, all the horror being finished and the world being able to pick up and move on. ... A prequel about stuff that happened before the events of the movie might be cool, though. Maybe something set during the time when the jaeger program was first introduced. Or something a bit later. With extra appearances from the Russians please ah I mean, ahem, anyway.

... Not even gonna' lie, immediately after watching it I got a hankering for Hetalia + Pacific Rim fusions/crossovers/something. And that + some kind of AU in which a second rift opens up in the north Altantic or something, so that there would be an excuse to throw the Nordics into the mix. (One-track mind, I have it). Though my thoughts of them as jaeger pilots are kind of crumbled by the fact that I have a hard time imagining any of them being drift compatible, all things considered. I mean, they're, well -- y'know. [/makes vague gestures toward the Scandinavia Trio, enough said] but ffff anyway, that's just a bit of silliness.

Anyway. It was really nice to be able to go to the cinema, ahhh. I think... I'll definitely try to do this more often, now.

Matinees are great for single theatergoers! Like myself. I pretty much only see matinees unless I'm both a) at home and b) my parents want to go too.

ANYWAY WASN'T IT FUN AND PERFECT FOR AWESOME FUSIONS. :D I wish I'd gotten a chance to go see it again, but York is sadly deficient in cinemas for some reason. At least the parts that I walk to.
