Fest-writing and a few other things
Mar. 3rd, 2013 01:26 pmHad a few nice days, but it's starting to get colder. What a bummer. I was hoping for a proper spring, but it looks like we'll have snow until late April again.
On Tuesday, I'll be going down to Edmonton to get that consultation for the dental surgery I need. Not looking forward to missing two days of work, but it can't be helped. I really wish I didn't live in the middle of nowhere. The trip is going to be long and boring and just, ugh. But I think I'll be able to get some writing done in the car, at least. That'd be good.
My brother recently came back from Mexico, and the way he describes it kind of make me want to go. It sounds really nice. I'm not very into warm weather, though. He said it was generally around 25C and that is way too hot for me. xD But it might be nice, just being in a warm environment and writing all day and not doing anything. Oh, who knows. I probably won't get to go on a trip this year anyway, depending on when my surgery gets scheduled, so I shouldn't even think about it. Though there was talk about another trip to Sweden, I don't think that will happen - but I haven't brought the subject up. My mum keeps pressuring me to go there again, and it's annoying.
Went out for lunch yesterday, which was nice. I'd been looking forward to it all week, but ended up having to put it off until next because I got downtown really late, but decided to do it anyway. I'm glad I did - it feels really great to treat oneself, especially since other things yesterday didn't go as well as I'd hoped.
Recently started reading Black Jack again. I own all the volumes, but stopped reading at volume 9 because my attention was grabbed by something else. It's such an awesome series, though, whether you're into medical drama or not. (Y'all should read it. JUST SAYING.) Also started reading Oliver Twist, which I've wanted to take a look at for ages but never really got around to. Say what one likes about Dickens, but I do enjoy is work. Took me a while to come around to it, though. I remember the first time I tried to read his stuff, I found it boring as hell. But then again, I was 13 or so, and had some very specific tastes in literature at that time....
I've had a sluggish start when it comes to working on my Nordipalooza fic. The research is started, but I haven't begun writing yet, and the actual plotting needs work. Hopefully I'll be able to work on it during those two days I need to take off, though. Get started with writing at least. It's just, I feel kind of unsure, because I'm doing a Serious Historical Fic and it's been a long time since I've written something like that. And I always tend to get worried about getting things wrong - and getting things wrong wouldn't be unexpected, because I tend to find reading and understanding things related to history very difficult. But... Oh, well. It's about the battle of the Sound, so y'know. So far back that at least I can be confident that nobody will be offended if I get something wrong; just a little bit annoyed probably.
One of the sources I've been using for this is a book that was written in the mid-1800s by some guy with a weeaboo-level love for the Dutch. Obviously, I need to take it with heaps of salt, but it's been helpful in getting me to understand the basic idea of what went on, and it sure is entertaining. The countries involved tend to be discussed in personified terms (as is expected from writing like this) and Denmark is made out to practically be a helpless damsel in distress who was valiantly saved by knight-errant Holland. It's hard to read this book without snickering a little.
I really hope I'll be confident enough to start writing this thing soon, though. Even though there is plenty of time left before posting opens, I'm worried I'll run out of it.
