This entry is about Hetalia and fanfiction indexing. If you don't know what that's about, just scroll on by. ;)
I'm writing down my plans for my indexes so that I won't forget. Er, if you use either of them, feedback would be appreciated. Especially on the "minor" ideas - if there are some that seem like they should be higher priority, I'll move them up - or if there is something I haven't thought of, I might put it on the list too.
I have no idea when I'll be doing all this, but we'll see.
Baltic Index
The Baltic Index has gotten so big, and I'm going to have to make changes. I had been planning to regardless, but when I updated today I received the dreaded "Entry too large, cannot update entry" error. I had to go back to my coding and cut down some summaries a bit so the entry would be small enough to go through. That won't work next update, though, not if there are any new prompts.
So, this is what it means: The Baltic Index needs an overhaul. Okay. (And the Nordex too, but that's lower priority)
★ These are my major plans for it
☆ Currently, prompts for Latvia, Estonia, and Group are lumped into the same page. Ditto for fills. This is the side where I'm encountering the problem of the entry being too big. This is going to have to be split up.
☆ End result is that each character, as well as Group, will get their own prompts page. Ditto for fills. Like Lithuania, Latvia will have his own separate sub-index pages, one for fills and one for prompts. Same for Estonia. Any/Two/Group will be also be divided into its own prompt and fill pages.
☆ A "Contents" page listing each separate section will be made. This is going to be made in the entry currently labelled as Lithuania-Unfilled, as it serves as the "Main" page, and it's the page hetalia_kink links to. Lithuania's unfilled prompts will be shuffled over to a separate page.
★ Minor things that also need addressing
☆ Latvia's "other" prompts will be divided up for ease of quick-reading. Because that section is so miscellaneous, it will probably be divided into Latvia/[misc Nations] and Latvia/[anyone/other/unspecified pairing].
☆ Lithuania's "other" prompts will be divided up for ease of quick-reading. This section is very miscellaneous, but there is a division. So, it will be divided into Lithuania/[Misc Nation] and Lithuania/[Two or more people]
☆ After the "table of contents" page is made, I will change each sub-page to just link back to the Contents, rather than to every other sub-page. This will look neater than the current situation, especially since there will be so many sub-pages.
☆ General summary cleanup... some of them are a bit messy or too long for my liking.
Nordic Index
For the Nordic Index, currently I'm indexing from the Fills List (and the now-reopened Part13). I started from the beginning there because sometimes people list fills that I have passed over, especially if they are responding to anyone/anyone prompts. So, that's the current status. The changes I want to do after that mainly involve retagging everything.
★ Major planned changes
☆ I'm concerned with noting fill status. As it stands, when a prompt is filled, I mark it "fill". If the fill is posted somewhere other than the thread (i.e. past part fills) then both the prompt and the fill are marked as "fill". This is confusing and throws off the numbers.
☆ The new approach for tagging prompts will be this: they will be retagged as either "prompt-unfilled" or "prompt-filled".
☆ If the fill is in the prompt thread, the prompt will be tagged "fill". If not, the prompt will not be tagged fill [only "prompt-filled"], but the fill will be tagged "fill".
★ Minor possible changes
☆ If the prompt only specifies one Nordic (and no other characters), or the fill is only about one Nordic character, this will be tagged "Nordic-solo".
☆ A "threesome" tag; possibly not necessary, but might make navigation easier.
☆ A "nordic/nordic" pairing tag and a "nordic/non-nordic" pairing tag. Possibly not necessary, but might make navigation easier.
☆ Are separate tags for each pairing necessary? I'm considering following maple_kink's model with this. There is not a huge variety in Nordics pairings, so I think I could do it easily enough. With the Delicious system it's not really necessary, but it might make navigation easier. It would also help differentiate between prompts such as "Sweden/Finland, with Denmark involved" and "Sweden/Denmark, with Finland involved", that kind of thing.
Hmmmm... I think that's everything.

Date: 2010-07-19 02:45 am (UTC)But the list is hereif you want to look. o3o
And there are way more requests for Lit/[two people] than I thought there would be. Mostly Lithuania/Poland/[someone else] or Lithuania/America[someone else], it seems. And of course there is some general non-smut stuff with more than one person involved, too.

Date: 2010-07-19 03:03 am (UTC)Huge fan of both indexes chiming in...
Date: 2010-07-21 03:45 pm (UTC)Everything you mentioned for the Baltic index sounds great. Too much work, IMO, but it would be quite spiffy.
As for the Nordic index...whoa dude, whoever keeps that maple kink is insane. Those are some detailed tags. They must read every fill. Who wants to do that? The new tags could work for prompts, but I don't know about fills. A prompt may ask for something that only specifies one Nordic, but the filler may sneak another one or two in there, and you'd never know until you read it. I know of one Norway/human you'd never know was ultimately Norway/Denmark unless you read the whole thing. So if you go with pairing tags, I can see some not getting properly tagged, especially if the request was for a kink a lot of people avoid. I suppose you could keep an entry here for suggested tag inclusions on fills? IDK, man.
The changes for filled vs. unfilled prompt tags sound good, though. You're awesome for keeping up with both of these, and I thank you for it.
Re: Huge fan of both indexes chiming in...
Date: 2010-07-21 05:42 pm (UTC)Urgh, you have a point re: Nordics... not only do I not want to read every fill, I don't have time, considering it's Nordics. Well, this idea is probably out, then - unless either I go insane and decide to read everything, or fillers start accurately labelling their stuff. (Not in a month of Sundays)
There currently is a contact post for people to prod me if something isn't tagged right, but I dunno' if anyone will use/see it, though it has its own tag. Ehhh. So I guess I'll hold off the other stuff for now, and concentrate on getting everything done + properly dividing prompts and fills.

Date: 2010-07-27 05:24 pm (UTC)Generally I prefer to work alone, because it makes things easier for me to keep track of what's finished and what is not. But if I do decide to put in the detailed pairing-tag changes, I'll definitely keep you in mind, considering you've probably read way more of the Nordic fills than I have.
For now, though, if you run into anything incorrectly tagged while you're browsing the Nordex, just let me know on the main Nordex contact post. I'd appreciate it. :)
