-Sab has concluded that I could sleep through a hurricane (didn't wake up until something like 11:30 in spite of the construction in the basement)

-Several people do not share my love for tentacle-y things

-While in the shower I got an excellent idea for my Baltic Way fic. It just kind of hit me upside the head. Wonderful. I'd decided ages ago that I wanted to write something for the day, but had no idea how to proceed; now I know the direction I want to go. Shit, it's been ages since I last wrote Liet and I still have no idea how to write Latvia, oh well

-Blueberries mixed with cereal = awesome

-I am, apparently, a nerd for liking aquariums (and especially goldfish) as much as I do. However, Sab and I both agree that while saltwater tanks are pretty, they are WAY TOO MUCH TROUBLE and also dangerous.

For Latvia, I think my problem is that I disagree with almost all of the fanon on him (why is he so damn shota, he's a thousand years old) and there's not enough canon for me to feel confident in my interpretation, so he ends up as a sort of blandly-characterized blob and I lose interest in writing him.

My other problem is that I can't connect the history with the character at all, so I don't even have that to draw on. GIMME SOMETHING TO WORK WITH, LATVIAAAAAAARGH

On a more cheerful note: SO COOL.

"LATVIAAAAARGH" is right. WHY does he have to be so difficult D: Sigh.
I tend not to care much about fanon interpretations, so there we go. Lack of canon has never been a problem for me before (I do love writing Norway, after all). I think maybe what I'll do is re-read through the strips, brush on my history, and then just see where my pen takes me.

Ah, fanon has a way of working itself into my head like...idk, a shipworm into a tasty wooden piling. Even while I'm RAAAAAGING at it, it's messing about and changing my interpretation of the characters. Then it has epic bloody battles with my headcanon and comes out as some weird chimera thing and I make horrible analogies I am going to stop before this gets ridiculous.

If you're looking for history, I'll pimp out Walking Since Daybreak--it's a fascinating book, by a Latvian-Canadian historian who specializes in modern German history, and it says some really fantastic things about the Baltic states and WWII and the refugee experience. It's been inspiring me for fic since I read it, but...LATVIAAAAAAAARGH.

Well, 'dangerous' to a certain point. I mean, a lot of the things in saltwater tanks can sting you/bite you/are poisonous/people are commonly allergic to them etc. That's what I mean by 'dangerous', especially in comparison to a regular old freshwater tank.

Yeah, I'm surprised there isn't more fandomstuff out there on the subject, considering how bloody awesome it is (I was completely wow'd the first time I read about it). I've seen a little bit of fanart, but not much in the way of fic, really.... Anyway, yes, I'll be writing about it, and hopefully it will be finished in time for the 23rd.
