So, I didn't accomplish any of the things I intended to do today, but that's okay. I'll do it tomorrow. I think that I will try to be out the door before 11 or so, as I want to get much of my stuff done before the day gets too hot. I need to head up to 8th street, which is quite a ways away. Unfortunately, I'll have to take the bus. I would walk, but what with how hot it has been lately, I'm definitely not in the mood for it.

My apartment is too fucking hot, ughhhhhh. No air conditioning, no ventilation. I opened the window, but it doesn't help much, and I hate opening the window because the dirt from the alleyway comes in. I have a fan, but it doesn't help much. Fucknuggets. So anyway, I'm sitting here with the lights off and the fan going and it's too fucking hot and UGHHHHH I want to take a cold shower, but it's a little bit late at night for that.

I'm craving fish sticks and it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I'm actually considering making some. Mmmmm delicious fish sticks. With vinegar. Yes.

So, I had intended to write tonight, but didn't. I did go to the cafe, but I spent most of my time there re-reading through the sections in my Sweden book about the union with Norway. Unfortunately those sections are quite short, sigh. Anyway, I think I pretty much know how to proceed now, for sure. A lot of the issues I've been having related to how I would handle the passage of time. I'm covering several years here, rather than days, and this is something I'm not used to doing. But I think I have it sorted out now.

I now realize that I'm going to have to go back and revise a few details that I had already written. For instance, the story opens with the loss to Russia happening only months ago. Now, after reading a bit more, I figure I need it to take place either very late 1810 or early 1811. The reason: King Karl XIV Johan. Or, to refer to him by his birthname as my book does, Bernadotte. Here's what happened:

1809: Finland ceded to Russia.
late 1810: Bernadotte is made king of Sweden.
1813: Conflicts with Denmark.
1814: Norway ceded to Sweden.

Right, so that's what happened and at what times, but what's with this Bernadotte guy? Well, this part in my book caught my eye:

...it was vainly hoped that he would be in a position to assist in the reconquest of Finland and otherwise improve the country's military status. While peace with Denmark and France was successfully made that year, the reconquest of Finland was never realized. The new king, seeing Russia as a necessary ally rather than as an enemy, abandoned the grand duchy to the Tsar and focused his sights instead on a future conquest of Norway.

So. I need to shift the timeline forward a little bit, but now I'm rolling, and the ideas I have are perfect. I know precisely how I want to handle it now, at least for the next five pages or so. To be honest, I think what made it really click was the bit about the "future conquest of Norway", heh. Oh Sweden, you and your conquests. Ahem.

Of course, as per usual, the historical stuff is either going to be in the background or abstracted. The details are for my benefit, mostly - so that I can be sure of how everything progresses.

On a completely silly and mostly unrelated note, I love my new Swe/Nor icon, eeee~

I suppose he could look terribly frightening sometimes...until you realise he's only giving you that horrible look because you sat on his knitting and he's utterly devastated.

Oh Bernadotte. My homie.

Actually, he did ask the tsar, Alexander, if he could get Finland back since they were kind of allies now. Alex was like "Nnnnnnnnnnnno, can't do that", and Bernadotte shrugged it off pretty easily and asked for help to conquer Norway. It took some persuasion and time since Russia and Denmark were BFF's, but in the end, Alex agreed to it because he wanted to stab Napoleon in the eye. Stealing a country from an ally to give it to an enemy sounded like a nice and evil plot.

It's hilarious when you look at how little Denmark did during the Napoleonic wars and how much he lost. xD
EVERYONE ATTACKED HIM. HIS FLEET WAS STOLEN TWICE, HIS CAPITAL GOT BLOWN UP TWICE, HE WAS STABBED IN THE BACK BY ALL HIS ALLIES, AND HE LOST NORWAY TO GODDAMN SWEDEN. It's a wonder he didn't
/annoying

You go and make some fick sticks, love. And maybe eat some ice-cream. It helps me when my house gets too hot.

Yup, you got that right~!
The only reason he asked for Finland in the first place was because it was expected of him. I mean, the Swedes imported a BAMF FRENCHIE because they needed some serious help. He wanted Norway because he was strangely attracted to him of strategic purposes. Norway was closer and had a pretty convenient border. So yeah. Bernadotte didn't get the whole Finland-issue.

JUST LIKE THE GOOD OL' DAYS!

Haha, no problem, I'm still working on that Napoleonic Wars-thingie~

..... that sounds. Well. *snort* But don't worry, Sweden's education system is pretty fail too, but on the other way around. We learn so much about American history that my ears actually sting whenever I hear another word about the Civil Wars. Sweden's wonderful neutral government has some strange ideas that if children in school learn about awesome, Nordic history, we will all go Nazi. So we never hear anything awesome about our history. We're doomed to find out that stuff on our own. grumblegrumleCURSEYOUSOCIALDEMOCRATS
