May. 16th, 2009 12:52 amMmm~ I just had a hot bath and it was soooo nice. Used some of my Lush bubble bar, ah~ So now, I'm squeaky clean, content, and nearly ready for bed. I'm also not very intelligent at the moment because my head is all pleasantly fuzzy from the steam.
Anyway, the package notice I received was indeed for my Amazon package. Moomins! Just the first volume. Also a few other things - the "Gutterflower" album by the Goo Goo Dolls, and a history book - A Concise History of Finland by David Kirby.
Why yes, yes, I am obsessed. :| Seems as good a place to start as any, though~
Mmm, I'm so pleased that the "Gutterflower" album arrived though. You know, I haven't been able to find it in stores at all, and I've been looking for quite a long time. It has some of my favourite songs on it, including "What Do You Need?", which I absolutely love. It's on the FST I'm putting together actually. Perfect for Sweden-Finland conflict.
I started reading my new history book while in the bath, and so far I'm rather pleased with it. It's a scholarly book (Cambridge UP), but it's easy to understand even though I'm not a history student. The main focus in this one is on post-1809 Finland, but early Finland and the period under Swedish rule are covered too - just not in the amount of detail that I would have liked. Ah, well. The early stuff it does cover will be a help for fic, at any rate - especially in terms of how far back in time I can set it. Naturally that's the easiest solution to the "Sweden problem" when writing Fin/Est - set it before they fell to Sweden and Denmark - but it's important to know just how much wiggle room I have.
... There was something REALLY intellectual that I was going to say but I'm kind of too fuzzy to properly phrase it right now. Something about how I should take the land more into consideration when writing Finland. There was some remark in the book (can't be bothered to look for it) about the land being connected to identity or something. It made me think of Canada. Gods know I wax poetic about the land often enough. There's something here, need to mix it in.
As a side note, Finland seems to be like... the Manitoba of Europe. Big space containing lakes and trees and a whole lot of nothing, and almost nobody lives there. Pffff... but it's a hellofalot more interesting than Manitoba, anyway.
On a fanfic related note I have people saying WRITE MOAR NORWAY. *facepalm* So I'm going to... write more Norway. More of the Swe/Nor story that is - though I planned to do so anyway; I don't drop giftfics. Sometimes they just take a long time. Probably won't be posting any more excerpts until it's done, though. No idea when that will be - I catch time to write a page here and there when I can, but this one will be long, I think. Though I'm not sure how long. Hopefully not as huge as "Starry Night" - then again, who knows.

Date: 2009-05-16 09:24 am (UTC)Ahaha, my city is basically surrounded by lakes ...and forests too, at least my home is so well camouflaged in forests that you can't see it from the highest observation tower in the city. ;_; Never been to Manitoba but it sure sounds as I'd feel like at home there. XD

Date: 2009-05-16 06:18 pm (UTC)Mm, I think I might be at home in your place. I grew up in a very small city completely surrounded by thick pine forest, with a river running through it, and it was five hours from anywhere. Ah~ I miss it. Right now I live in a place that is just flat prairie for miles and miles and I feel so strange here.
