Watching Ignatieff's first address
Jan. 18th, 2009 09:13 ame.e *kicks TV* Parliamentary crisis this, economic crisis that. Arrrrgh.
And Stephen Harper is a douche.
And I hope Ignatieff doesn't turn out to be a disappointment like Dion. -_- *sigh*

Ketchup chips are EEEW. I don't like them. But I'm glad we have them, because I couldn't imagine a world without 'em. =p

Date: 2009-01-18 05:07 pm (UTC)Well, after the whole, you know, clusterfuck with the election that didn't happen, Stephane Dion stepped down as Liberal leader. Now the liberal party has a new leader, Michael Ignatieff. Today was his first official address as Liberal leader. Now, I don't know how much you know about the Canadian parties, but basically, even though we don't have a two-party system like y'all do, it's still techically sort of a two-party race. By that I mean that for the most part, the Conservatives and the Liberals are the only parties with enough firepower to get enough votes to end up with their leaders as Prime Minister. Things are starting to change now, with the NDP and the Greens gaining more popularity (and there's the Bloc Quebecois too, but I doubt they'd ever win. If they did, I swear, Duceppe would shit himself). It's still basically a Conservative-Liberal race.
So, that's why Ignatieff is so important. If we want Harper out of the PM seat, and the Liberals in charge instead, we need a strong Liberal leader (or for the NDP or Greens to get enough clout to have their party win, but I doubt that will happen any time soon).
Now, I'm not too sure what I think about Ignatieff yet. IIRC, there is going to be parliamentary votes on the next budget very soon (though I don't remember the date). This is partly what caused that whole shitstorm in late 2008, so it should be interesting, and possibly full of fail. Ignatieff made it clear in his address that he does not agree (at this point in time) with what Harper is proposing, so unless some changes are made to that proposal, there could be... issues. And maybe another possible-maybe-or-not election? Who knows.
And the coalition is still around, but it's kind of stuck in the back pocket, so to speak.
I just hope Ignatieff doesn't screw up. e.e I'm so sick of Harper. If there isn't an election, then we at least need a competent Opposition leader.
*flail* I need to watch the news more often. I just forget to. It's online, even! I fail. xD

Date: 2009-01-18 05:14 pm (UTC)I hope the old revolutionary spirit stays alive, though. My inner obnoxious Alfred thinks that now that I have a left wing boss, so should you! Then we could match! If only it were so easy.

Date: 2009-01-18 05:23 pm (UTC)Ahhh, revolutionary spirit. That's the problem, we didn't have one! =p But I do hope things change and that we end up matching. *flail*

Date: 2009-01-18 08:42 pm (UTC)Haha, that's sad. I think our problem is we have too much. We're always trying to buy off your natural resources, you should get some of ours! The revolutionary spirit! I don't think we need anymore for a while.
*is now imagining Alfred trying to get Matt to have some of his 'revolutionary spirit', which, in Hetalia terms, would probably be something like Red Bull*
