Hummm. I wrote a fic tonight (well, it's not quite finished, and needs a buttload of editing) but it wasn't the one I intended to write. And I'm kind of uneasy about it. I mean, I like it, and want to share it, but at the same time it deals with a subject that I'm not sure I'm qualified to write about. Hmm. :/
'tis a Serious Business sort of thing, not the fluff idea I had.
(And 'twas Hetalia, of course)

In other news, I made scrambled tofu for supper and it turned out okay, but not as nice as I had hoped.

Ahh, a fic! And serious business? I like some serious business.

As for that, the community has had several fics dealing with Serious Business that were very well received (One was Germany and dealing with the Holocaust in a sort of metaphorical way, and one was about 9/11. Though America was hardly in it at all and it was more about the other nations hearing about it..very dark, but good). So I'll leave it up to you to decide whether you wrote your well or not, but unless you think you might have been accidentally horribly offensive (and I really doubt that) I'm sure people will appreciate it. I can understand feeling uneasy though....I feel so uneasy I pretty much just don't write anything, so I'm hardly one to talk, am I?

Mm, 'struth. You do have a point. And I'm probably nervous for nothing. This one, it isn't half as dark or controversial as some of the things I've read in this fandom. And now that I look over it, while there's a bit of bitterness and anger in it, some parts are positive.

At the same time, it's difficult. This one, it involves a personification of pre-colonized North America, see. Canada and US were created. There was someone there before, but he was displaced. That's the approach I'm taking.
I almost feel as if I shouldn't have written it, because I'm not qualified to comment on such a thing. Who am I to talk about colonization? It's the same problem I have with my Aboriginal lit class: How can I possibly act as a critic of Aboriginal literature? I'm just another white person who thinks he knows what he's talking about, but really doesn't know squat. I think this feeling is partly because I have been reading many essays by Red Lit critics, who are Aboriginal themselves, who say that no, people who are not Aboriginal cannot possibly comprehend to the full extent the problems of colonization/identity/oppression discussed here, it's always seen through a filter of privilege.

But I'm probably overthinking everything. After it'd edited, I'll definitely post it in my journal, though I'm not sure about the actual Hetalia comm.

Ahhh, I get what you're talking about now. It's a very interesting idea. A few people have brushed at it with a short fic or picture, but nothing really heavy that I can remember.

I understand where you're coming from on the worry, though, I've heard some of the same argument from non-white feminists in describing how their experience is different. It is careful ground to tread on. And while those who say we will never understand them are perfectly right, I don't think there is anything wrong in trying to understand as much as you possibly can. And the very fact that you've taken a class about this and are sensitive to possibly 'doing it wrong' show that you're being as respectful as you can about it. Which is actually quite a lot, so you shouldn't put down your efforts too much.

I would read that fic with pleasure except I still have to find some time to read those Hetalia scanlations. ;o; Oops.

Scrambled tofu is kind of like scrambled eggs, but it doesn't taste like much. And it was kind of watery. If that makes any sense. I think if I had used some kind of sauce, it might have been better, but I didn't think of that. I just used some spice (cracked black pepper, paprika, garlic and oregano), as well as cheese and lots of vegetables, but... eh.

Re, Hetalia: Fortunately, when you do get the time, it won't take too long. Only parts 1-4 are scanlated so far IIRC, + the Chibitalia thing. There are a ton of "extras", but you don't need to read them to understand what's going on.
To be honest, since my fic has nothing to do with the main storyline, nor most of the characters, the only thing you would need to have read is the "extra" strip with Canada in it (there is only one) in order for it to make sense. =p
