yuuago: (Germany - Reading)
Just Finished: A Thistle In His Mouth by Peter Huchel/translated by Henry Beissel. I picked this up at random when I was in Ontario, and I'm very glad I did - I ended up liking this poet's work a lot. The language reminds me a little of Hauge, or I guess I should say Huchel in translation reminds me of Hauge in translation. Except while Hauge has a sort of quiet, internal melancholy, Huchel's work is much sharper, full of a certain... I don't know what. Despair, maybe.

Currently Reading: The Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin. I picked this up a very long time ago, in Saskatoon I think, but never got around to it. It's a Victorian travelogue and reads like a Victorian travelogue; nothing unexpected there. I think I expected there would be more talk of time at sea (I guess due to the mention of the ship in the title), which is likely why I picked it up in the first place, but there isn't much talk of sailing. Lots of discussion of birds, though! And certain opinions on said birds. (Mister Darwin does not seem to like vultures much. ;p)

Also Reading: The Long Walk by Jan Zwicky. One of my favourite Canadian poets! Why haven't I managed to get around to this volume until now? I don't know, but here we are. This one was put out in 2016, and I'm unsure if I'll enjoy it as much as Forge, but we'll see.

Reading Next: I don't know, but I'm probably going to try to gnaw through more of the unread titles on my shelf. I do know that I have at least two books on nautical history that I never did get around to reading. Or maybe I'll tackle some plays? In the pile, I found a collection of 3 works by Ibsen, and I haven't read any of them, which surprises me a lot because my interest in Ibsen predates my more general interest in Norway.
