Reading Wednesday
May. 23rd, 2018 08:10 pmUgh, heat waves should be illegal. It's so warm, I haven't been able to sleep. Though I guess it does not help that we don't have air conditioning.
Anyway... Reading, yes -
Just Finished: Twoism by Ali Blythe. This is a poetry collection that I picked up at random; rather glad I did, because even though his work isn't an exact match to my taste, Blythe's work is interesting to me. That's always nice to come across. There's a certain feeling to his work, in the rhythm and turns of phrase and form - it's multifaceted. As an example of his work - "Hit" is one of the ones I like best from this collection. Anyway, well worth a look. And if you've been thinking of checking out work by trans authors, this might be one to add to your to-read list.
Currently Reading: Blackfish City by Sam J. Miller. I saw its summary* on the list of books recently added at our library, and decided I didn't want to wait to read it. I'm not very far in yet, but so far I'm enjoying the worldbuilding; city in the arctic + wide variety of cultures all existing together + crumbling dystopia-ish scifi = my jam. There's something about the vibe that reminds me a bit of the MaddAddam series, but that's probably just because of the genre similarity. We'll see how this goes.
Reading Next: I have a few things in the queue...
For As Far As The Eye Can See by Robert Melançon. This one is a collection by a Quebecois poet; original title is Le Paradis des apparences. A quick flip through it revealed some good nature imagery, so I'm looking forward to it. Aside from that, also -
Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko. This one was originally published in 1977, and it's one of the important works of indigenous North American writing from that period. I can't recall reading any work from this time by Native authors south of the border; all the ones I am sure about have been FNMI authors in Canada. So I expect there might be some things that I won't have context for. But that'll make it interesting. And besides, I've heard it's a good read.
Aaaand I still have that one book on ILL that hasn't arrived yet. Grumble, grumble.
