Reading Wednesday

Finished reading: Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett. Not my favourite Witches book, but it wasn't bad. I think I spoke more in detail about it in previous entries. I think I like the Witches best in their own context - this is something I always feel every time they're taken outside of it. It just doesn't click with me as well as they usually do.

Currently reading: Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey. This is my first time re-reading the Last Herald-Mage trilogy in about a decade, and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed. I didn't remember much about the novels themselves, only the emotions; and all that stuff is coming flooding back. I just - the Valdemar books, but more specifically this trilogy, meant so much to me as a kid. And yeah, they're cheesy and sparkly and the writing isn't really very good, but I identified with Vanyel so much. And it meant so much that there was a character like him in published, mainstream fiction.

Anyway! The novel itself - well, it's proving to be a very quick read. I can't remember if I used to breeze through this author's stuff, but maybe I did. It's fun, though. These books are so sparkly and I always love some good cheese. Can't say I'm crazy about Tylendel, though - I mean, I appreciate that Vanyel loves him, but... eh. If I remember right, I was always more fond of Stefan. (Leaving aside that they're technically the same...) Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy, at least. Things are just getting started.

But ughhh oh man. Reading this now, I can definitely see that there's a heavy Lackey influence in my writing, even after all these years. Still. On the one hand: Kind of embarrassing. On the other: I regret nothing.

Reading next: ...I have no idea. I set aside some books for hold when I was at the library, but at the time there was that whole power outage nonsense, so who knows if they were actually put on hold or not. :Va We shall see.
