Yeah, that's what it's been like lately. :V

On the upside, I did finish reading Stephen King's novella collection, If It Bleeds. Very fun! While I enjoy King's doorstoppers, they sometimes run away with him a bit, so it's cool to see him work with ideas that are more condensed.

The novella with the same title as the collection - If It Bleeds - is the reason I picked this one up; there is a long library waitlist for the recently-released Holly, so I decided to read through the older material that Holly Gibney shows up in. It was really nice to see her again; I just really like her as a character. And I really liked the way King revisited the concept of the Outsider - not something exactly the same as previous, but adjacent, a different iteration. Ughhh I'm not very articulate right now but I found it very creepy and effective.

I see that production rights for If It Bleeds were acquired by HBO, which did the adaptation for The Outsider. Suppose there is/was a plan to do an adaptation with the same actress who played Holly previously? I did like her a lot, despite TV!Holly being very different from book!Holly. Would love to see what they'd do with this, 'cause I think it could be really good. Source material is short, but there's a lot to work with.

Anyway, the other novellas in the book - I really liked Mr. Harrigan's Phone. It deals with modern tech, but the concept - beyond-the-grave contact - is so classic. And while the build is kind of slow, that means it gave time to develop character in a way that I think King is really good at, so it was like... really effective. I haven't seen the film version of this, but I would like to - will get around to it eventually.

The Life of Chuck is weird. Interesting, but weird. It's kind of artsy compared to what I usually expect from King. Which is not a bad thing; just different. In some ways it's like three separate stories smashed together rather than a coherent whole (and having read the author's commentary at the back of the book, that's... soooort of the case?) but at the same time it does all thread together. I dunno, I'm going to have to think about it for a bit.

Rat fell kind of flat for me. I'm not sure why! Could be the cold meds, could be exasperation at the POV character. Or maybe the scary bits just didn't work for me - devil's bargain concept could theoretically be interesting, but via a talking rat... Ehh.
