I find it kind of interesting how some people in fandom find present tense amateurish and fanficcy.

My more immediate association with it is stuff like Literary Fiction and pretentious self-consciously artsy CanLit short stories.

My experience with formal writing discussion is a little bit outdated, but yeah, that's still the first thing I think of when I hear 'present tense'.

Yeah, I get that. I do also feel like it gets used a lot in modern YA (including some that skews literary in sensibility, if that makes sense), and I wonder if it's a thing of younger fans coming in with particular preferences influenced by the writing they themselves admire, and then their inexperience getting misdirectedly associated with some of those preferences?

That's very possible! I don't have a lot of experience with YA (have read a few things, not a lot) but if it's used heavily there that might be where part of the idea comes from.

I've hit a point where I don't even know what I associate any tense or POV with anymore. XD It's all a mush of styles to me these days... probably not a good sign...

WELL, I dunno. If you don't associate it with anything in particular, that could be an indication of broader tastes/being less snooty about stuff than I am! Which is a good thing, I think.
