Reading Wednesday
Apr. 15th, 2015 05:54 amFinished Reading: MaddAddam by Margaret Atwood. The ending was pretty satisfying. Sometimes I come out of reading post-apocalyptic novels wanting to know more; while there's enough to latch onto here - in a fourth novel, or related story, or in fanfiction - I think I'm pretty satisfied with it as it is. The ending wrapped it up well.
Still really wondering how on earth the television series will handle this. In particular, the Crakers are very... well. It'll be a challenge - considering their appearance and whatnot.
Currently Reading: Mindplayers by Pat Cadigan. Enjoying it so far; it's too bad that I didn't have access to this novel when I was a lot younger, because for a while there I was really into the idea of linking people via their dreams, and I think I would've got a kick out of this, even though tech-induced dreaming wasn't what I was looking for at the time.
One thing that I dislike is that setting description is a tad spare - it's there, but I usually prefer something a bit... more. But, this is some of her early writing, I don't know if the later stuff is any different. I'm still finding it difficult to put down, though, so obviously that doesn't turn me off.
I will note, though, that I wouldn't recommend this one to anyone who's squicked by weird things happening to eyes. Not gore, it's just, the mindplay machines work by plugging into the optic nerve, so there's... well. Weird things happening to eyes. It's a recurring thing in this book.
Reading Next: Probably Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett. Meant to get around to it this week, but then Pat Cadigan distracted me. :) I should probably... find it... My Pratchett books are organized, to a point, but they're also double-stacked on three different shelves, in no particular order. ... One of these days I should organize them chronologically, or something.
Looking forward to reading: The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu. I heard about this one on Scalzi's blog (relevant entry) and it sounds really cool. It's "a re-imagining of the rise of the Han Dynasty in a secondary world fantasy setting". And could be described as "silkpunk" - sort of like steampunk, but Chinese-inspired, of course. IT SOUNDS FASCINATING. But... I'm going to have to hold off on it for a while. The ebook is the same price as a regular book, so I'm just going to sit here and wait until the price goes down. Or something. Or maybe by the time I clear up my to-read list, I'll have an easier time getting down to the library and will be able to borrow a hard copy, in the unlikely event that they have it. We'll have to see. Said list is super long anyway, I don't need to add to it, but... This looks so cool.
