It's been a while since I saw it, but Man of Marble (Poland, 1977) might be worth investigating if you're so inclined. It still amazes me that this film could have been produced when it was, considering how critical it is of the communist system and the Stakhanovite style of socialist productivity.
I also need to get my hands on the Soviet TV miniseries TASS Is Authorised to Declare... and Seventeen Moments of Spring, both of which are said to be fascinating examples of Soviet-era espionage films.
