I was going to do something productive tonight, but then the new VH comic strip came out.

It's cute! But sad! And it's only available for the mobile version, from what I can tell. So I'll talk a little bit about the contents, since console/computer players won't be able to read the strip. But I'll cut it.

So, like the title suggests, the story is about Walt and how he came to be a dog medic. We're also introduced to Walt's sister, Cassie (kind of an odd name I think, doesn't sound very German, but eh). And we also find out the name of Walt's handler; Dr. Hans Weiss. (Interestingly, there's a VH fanwiki floating around on the internet that, prior to this release, gave his name as Andreas, as well as a few other details about him. I have no idea where they got that name from, and that aside, as far as I can tell, the other details are also 100% fanon, because the game doesn't give evidence for it at all.)

Anyway. The plot is basically: Walt and Cassie were raised on a farm near Cologne. A year before the start of the war, the two of them helped rescue a drowning soldier from a nearby river. This same incident is when the dogs met Hans, who was luckily nearby and quick on the scene to treat the man - and quick to befriend the dogs afterward.

Because of Cassie and Walt's heroic actions, they were taken into military service a few days after this incident. Then, a year later, the war broke out, and of course they had to serve. Cassie became a messenger dog, and Walt, as we already know, was put into medical service. At this same time, Hans was drafted for his services - and the casualty dog who was assigned to him was none other than Walt.

I won't go into detail about the rest because I can't think of a good way to describe it, but - messenger dogs had a very risky job, and Cassie was no exception. The human characters in Valiant Hearts aren't the only ones with sadness and loss in their lives; Walt has just as much as the rest.

I took some screencaps while going through the comic, and put together a photoset. I posted it to tumblr but I'm adding one extra image here because I liked it and because it shows a bit more about how the strip is formatted. It's basically exactly like a comic strip, really, but with music/sound (no dialogue voiceover, unlike the actual game). ...I decided to go with the old photoset dimensions because I have no idea wtf to do with the new ones right now.
