I feel your pain! I honestly assume that more often than not people are bothersome about the significant other thing because they get a kick out of playing match-matker, rather than because they want what's best for you (I mean, I really doubt they're doing it for your best interest given their disregard for your discomfort). I dunno, people need to learn how to back off. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't try to disguise it as genuine concern for your welfare.
Also! Given people's reactions, it seems that "I don't want a relationship" sometimes gets interpreted as being condescending, as maybe implying that you feel you're """above""" needing a relationship. Which is total garbage, of course.
