Slow, slow, slow
Jan. 1st, 2010 11:58 pmWhenever it's time for someone to leave, mum starts shoving food in their direction. "Here, take some cookies with you! Oh, and this package of fudge! And X and Y and Z!" She's like my grandmother that way. Does it to my brother, too, and at supper time there is always something similar. "Do you want more? No? There's still pasta left, how about that? No? How about dessert? I have tarts and pie and fruit - are you sure you don't want any? Are you sure?" Always pressing food on people.
Well, that's how it was today. I'm going to be going home with fudge but I kind of ended up eating all the cookies, oops. Haha. Oh, well. Man, am I ever looking forward to being back in Saskatoon, though I'm kind of worried how the flight will go. For those who don't know, there was an incident on Christmas Day (?) in the US that caused international flights to be shut down for a while, both in America and in Canada. Least, that's my understanding. Then the result is that flights were backlogged for quite a few days, and eventually things started moving, but there were huge-ass delays. Now, I think things have calmed down a bit, especially when it comes to just inter-provincial flights, but it's probably slowed still. Man, I'm just glad that Fort McMurray's airport isn't a major one, else there could potentially be huge issues with delays. I'll have no problem getting to Edmonton, and probably Edmonton to Calgary will be fine, but it's the Calgary to Saskatoon flight that I'm worried about.
I'm still working on making a list of ~resolutions~ for the new year. I've felt so busy these last few days that I haven't really be able to sit down and think on it. I've decided something though - since I never fulfil goals if they're vague, I want to talk only in defined things, and preferably specifics. Nothing like "try to be a better person" or undefined stuff like that. More like, "get driver's license by May" and "read at least one non-academic book per month". Probably 3/4 of it will be real-life related, and 1/4 will be fanstuff-related. We'll see.
I've started re-watching Saiyuki. Very exciting~ I've never actually seen the entire series. Only up until 12, I think - maybe even fewer than that. This was back in the days of fansub vhs, gasp and egads. Anyway, it'll probably take me a while to get through this. I had intended to also re-read the few manga volumes I have, but er, looks like I won't be making my way through them before I leave. (I would take them with me, but space in my luggage is kind of limited). After that, I'm going to tackle Utena, which is still dl'ing. I've only seen a few episodes of that one, too. That was all thanks to dearest
parzi, who copied her fansub tapes for me back in the day. Ahhhh, memories.
Sigh. Should get back to packing now. I have a feeling I'll be up all night.

Date: 2010-01-02 06:51 am (UTC)Yeah Minekura's art has improved like whoa though. XD Reload is GORGEOUS. The manga in general is better than the anime (SKIP GUNLOCK, I AM NOT KIDDING, IT IS AWFUL - the only redeeming value it had was making me realize Chin Iisou had streaked hair), but I still have nostalgic love for the anime, which I watched OBSESSIVELY my first year of college...
Utena is so fucking good, I don't even have words. ;o; (AHA AND IF YOU GET IT WATCHED I CAN MAKE YOU READ MY CREEPY FIC WITH THE FONTCOLORS, OHOHOHO.)

Date: 2010-01-02 11:31 am (UTC)INSERT SAIYUKI FANGIRLING HEREIf I have scanlations of the manga volumes I would spam them on you, but alas I don't. But I'm so glad I have a few Saiyuki volumes here since after chatting with you last night I'm craving for some corny demon ass-kicking. But yes, tell me if you want the spinoff arc, I have scanlations and manga volumes for that.
Getting a driver's license isn't too hard.
It's the forcing yourself to drive again after your first crash that's nerve-wracking okay I suck at motivating peopleMy mum does that too, at the end of dinner she'll be pressing food on us. Then right when we're chewing on an extra mouthful she'll comment on how we seem to have gained weight orz|||

Aaah I love their music but can't really even try to sing their songs because they either have really weird lyrics or swear words or both... ;3;
I watched like 3 or 5 episodes of Saiyuki a long time ago, but it never really hit me. But I've seen Utena and it's pretty ace even with the blatant OMG SYMBOLISM and the fact I didn't even have a favourite character, hmmnh. I totally have a soft spot for old animation in general because of the art style and aaaaaaah cell animation. ♥
My grandmother does that food forcing thing, too. That's why whenever we're at their place I'm always super impolite and leave the table early because soooooooob I don't want to sit there and listen to her telling me to eat eat eat eat eat.

Date: 2010-01-03 05:47 am (UTC)Saiyuki was SO CRACKED OUT. I definitely gave up on it on purpose. The manga is ridiculously better than the show.

Date: 2010-01-03 07:37 pm (UTC)Maayyyyybe I will check out Reload after I'm finished everything else, then. I do remember having the first volume of it at home, though I don't remember if I ever actually read it.
Utena = <3 and wait what you wrote fic of it? EXCELLENT.
I've started downloading Trigun too, because that's another one I loved but was only able to see a few episodes of. Ah, memories.

Date: 2010-01-03 07:48 pm (UTC)FLAPS HANDS WITH YOUI might very well prod you about the spinoff arc after I'm finished with Saiyuki (and Utena and Trigun and Moomins... ffff). WE SHALL SEE.
Getting a license is... difficult for me because I have almost no motivation to do it. I don't plan to own a vehicle, as I can't afford it. The only reason I'm doing it is because my learner's permit will expire in the summer, and I will need the license as ID.
To be honest, I don't like driving - my mum tried to teach me a few years ago and it made me so incredibly uncomfortable. But it might just be because it was my mum, and because we were using her shiny new van. Why she decided that was a good idea, rather than using Dad's old-ass Jeep with the huge dent in it from where he hit a deer, I do not know. But there it is.

Date: 2010-01-03 07:53 pm (UTC)I do not remember blatant OMG SYMBOLISM in Utena, however this is probably because at the time I was way too absorbed in staring at all the pretty. Hard to say - it's been a very long time.
I do like that older style best; must say, newer anime just doesn't look right to me, and I'm not entirely sure why. It's too... shiny? Maybe? I dunno'.

Date: 2010-01-03 07:54 pm (UTC)NGL I was kind of amused by the Calgary thing too. Even though the airport doesn't count.

Ah, I see. Is a license the only form of identification that is acceptable?
I liked driving, but I was driving an old, scratched-up mini Jeep, which was pretty easy to handle. I wouldn't want to drive a shiny car either, it'll make me way too nervous.
My dad sort of tried to teach me to drive, it was the most horrible thing ever.

Date: 2010-01-03 08:56 pm (UTC)And license is pretty much the only ID that is acceptable for everyday use. There are also non-license government-issued ID cards but it's very uncommon for people to have them. And I guess people can use passports as ID, but I don't have a passport yet, and even if I did, it isn't commonly used here for things other than flying. (For example, people would look at you very very strangely if you tried to get into a bar using passport as ID, unless you were obviously an international student or something).
Driving with my mum was... unpleasant and too much pressure.
Imagine Russia teaching you how to drive. Yes. It was like that. ;p

Date: 2010-01-03 09:02 pm (UTC)...all the stuff I've watched had a lot of men ffft
I think one of the reason why I like the spinoff much more is because Hakkai was a lot more kick-ass there <3
I normally use one of my student cards. Technically, it is not acceptable but most people accept it anyway. But sometimes you get anal people. A friend told me that she once got ID'd for buying plastic knives for a party.
lol Russia :D Mine was like... Germany.

Date: 2010-01-03 09:05 pm (UTC)KICKASS HAKKAI, YOU SAY. This is relevant to my interests.
Yeahhh, can't get away with student cards here, unless you're using it for stuff on the university campus. People would be like, "lol, no."
Pff Germany. I do not envy you.
Russiamum was like, "Why are you so nervous? It's all fine! ^J^" But you know that things would have been REALLY UNPLEASANT if I so much as got a scratch on that car ahhhhhhno subject
Date: 2010-01-03 09:14 pm (UTC)Fortunately the car I was using is already so scratched-up that no one would notice if I added a few.
I did damage it a bit when I got into an accident orz|||.That emoticon D:
Dad was like "LOOK AT THE MIRROR! YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO JUDGE THE DISTANCE BY LOOKING AT THE MIRROR! NO, STOP! YOU'RE GOING TOO FAST! SIGNAL! REMEMBER TO SIGNAL BEFORE YOU TURN!" Stress.
