Giving love in the internet is excellent. It's a lot less complicated than in real life. I mean, I love hugs and cuddling and physical contact in real life - but the problem is that I'm not close enough to most people to warrant such contact, so touching of any sort makes me feel really really weird. Fortunately, I appear kind of... stand-offish I guess, because I'm so non-social, so people don't try to touch me much.
Relationships - it's true when you say a lot of them might be experienced with relationships, but the key word I used when I was talking about it was serious relationships. Most high school stuff is stuff 'n nonsense, I'd say. It's one thing to be dating around, you know, and getting all upset when your boyfriend dups you or whatever, but it's another thing entirely to be committed to someone for several years. ... Gawd, saying that made me feel like an old fogey. Sometimes the young'ns in this fandom make me feel so ancient, even though I'm most certainly NOT. Maybe I'm just a little uptight.
As for published yaoi, I think that just falls into the realm of porn. Like straight porn, and romance novels by extension (for example), real-life rules don't apply, nor does real-life logic. It's kind of a different thing. Still bloody ridiculous though.
Fics: Yes. Historical accuracy is important. Unfortunately I don't know anywhere near as much as I should - but I do know enough that I can spot when something is way off. Sometimes I'll read something that doesn't really appeal to me if it illustrates it in a logical and historical way.
Anyway, the fics you've mentioned sound familiar; I think I might have read them at some point, except for the Sweden diary one, which I haven't gotten around to yet. I do know for a fact that I've read the tied-to-a-bed one (need to find it again so I can bookmark it, hmmm...). It was so dark and disturbing, gahhhh, but I did like it. I don't think I could ever write that kind of thing, nor could I read it much because it would give me nightmares (I prefer happy stories), but it was so good. I do like the serious stuff so very much, especially when it illustrates medieval Sweden and Finland in a way that makes sense.
That's one thing that bothers me so much. I mean - fortunately I haven't seen it much, but that's because I actively avoid it, but - stuff that illustrates their early years as... being something other than a conqueror and conquered relationship. It's as if people forget that Finland was taken by force. I can't see him going willingly. I keep trying to picture it, and it's anything but this happy relationship. Goddamn, I just -- I don't know.
As for the length of the Union fic, I have absolutely no idea. Considering the amount of time I plan to cover, and the progression of events, I think that it'll be about the same length as "Starry Night", which was eighteen handwritten pages and something like 11,000 words. It's really, really hard to say at this point though, as I've only written 5 pages so far and I'm still in 1810, haven't moved yet. It'll just be one long thing, unless I end up breaking it up into two parts like I did with Small Hours/Starry Night.
