Bite-sized horror movie reviews
Oct. 31st, 2021 09:10 pmBrief thoughts on four horror films I've watched recently:
+ The Craft (1996). I've never seen this one before! It was... okay. I kind of wish that I'd seen it when I was a teenager; I think I would have liked it much more. As-is, it was interesting to finally watch it and get context for some things that I'd osmosed, but - I'll be honest - I didn't like it. All of the characters were annoying, and the aesthetic wasn't enough to hold my attention. I preferred The Craft: Legacy, which I watched last year.
+ Candyman (2021). This is not a remake, but a sequel to the original that retcons other sequels. I found this film really stylish. There were some neat tricks with the cinematography that I really liked. Wouldn't say it was a favourite, but I thought it was a decent horror film. Made me want to rewatch the original, because there's a lot that I don't remember.
+ Doctor Sleep (2019). I liked the novel, and thought that this was a decent adaptation of it. Obviously, some things had to be snipped out, changed, and smoothed over in order to trim it down into something film-length, but I feel like it worked out pretty well overall. I liked Kyleigh Curran as Abra; she's pretty much exactly how I pictured her. Not a must-see, and I'm not sure how effective it is if you've seen or read The Shining but haven't read Doctor Sleep, but if you did read the novel and liked it, the movie's worth a look.
+ Halloween Kills (2021). Direct sequel to Halloween (2018), which is in itself a sequel to the original Halloween (1978). In two words: Don't bother. I was looking forward to this, because I like both the original and the 2018 movie. I thought the 2018 sequel was actually good as a movie, or at least good as a follow-up to the original film, with badass female characters and some really interesting/effective moments. But Halloween Kills is just a dull-ass splatterfest. It had some ideas in there, tried to say a few things about mob violence, but the execution was muddled as hell. And the characters that I liked so much in the 2018 film just didn't shine as much here. Unfortunate.
