Reading Wednesday
Sep. 26th, 2018 09:31 pmSince I was on vacation all last week, I haven't been reading much. Hmm....
Currently Reading: The Saboteur by Andrew Cross. Fictionalized version of the heavy water sabotage. My brain has been dead recently, so a trashy spy novel seems precisely what I needed... though I must say that I was a bit surprised by the setting; it's not one I'd usually expect to see. Then again, I don't read this kind of thing much.
Book Haul from Ottawa
I told myself I wouldn't go book shopping while I was in the city, but, well... You know how it is. In addition to the above novel, I came home with the following:
+ Dead Reckoning: The Untold Story of the Northwest Passage by Ken McGoogan. Nonfiction about the Franklin expedition. This one was written last year - so, post-rediscovery of the HMS Terror. I liked this author's book about Lady Franklin, so I expect this one will be interesting.
+ The Winter Fortress by Neal Bascomb. Nonfiction about the actual heavy water sabotage mission. I confess, after watching the Kampen om tuntvannet drama series, I've wanted to read about it.
+ River Woman by Katherena Vermette. I've read her novel The Break, and enjoyed it very much; we'll see how I like this volume of her poetry.
+ A Thistle in His Mouth by Peter Huchel; translated by Henry Beissel. I don't know anything about this poet, but from flipping through this volume, I think I'll like his work. There's something about his use of imagery (or the way it's translated, anyway) that reminds me of Hauge's work.
