Judo adventures 3.85
Attending: Me, M1, Jo & Ma, Ed. Ry-sensei instructing.
Today we went over some techniques not used in judo. First we learned the prohibited throw, kani-basami, or scissors throw. It's also called the "leg breaker" because, well, that is something that can happen with this throw - as well as head injuries. And that's why it's prohibited. This throw is done when you're standing sideways to your opponent, with hand on lapel. If standard grip, then you are on the left holding their lapel with your right hand. Your left leg goes up toward your opponent's hips, and you post on the ground while your right leg goes behind them and you make a scissor impact. Your opponent has no choice but to breakfall immediately.
This is a throw that you can't use generally, but it's required to know it to obtain your black belt.
We also learned ankle locks. These are a part of original flavour judo/jujitsu, but aren't in the curriculum these days, which is good because I know I will not remember them. Once again, these techniques can seriously hurt someone - we had to go very slowly and be very careful.
Apparently we will be doing some kata on Saturday. I'm looking forward to that, mostly because I won't remember any kata if I don't practice it.
