Knitting adventures

+ Currently working on an Irish Hiking Scarf* in natural cream. Lovely, lovely cables! This thing is going to be SUPER COZY and warm. And this pattern is really nice... Easy enough to turn my brain off, but not so much that it's a chore to knit.

+ Learning crochet is progressing! So far I can do three different stitches, though keeping correct tension/not crocheting too tightly, and keeping the edges neat, are still challenging - so I'm going to try to get better at that before I start any actual patterns.

Initially, I had a ton of difficulty just learning how to properly hold the yarn, which was really annoying. In desperation, I pulled out an old how-to knit and crochet book that I inherited. It's from 1948, and it has some slightly different methods, but it turns out the diagrams worked for me. Whaddaya' know.

I haven't used any actual patterns from this book because the material requirements are not modern and I can't be bothered to figure out what amounts like "sweater wool, 3 balls" would convert to. But at least the instructions for learning new things are pretty useful.

+ Next project will probably be a Reyna shawl*. "Can’t figure out what to knit with that single skein of sock yarn in a variegated colorway that you’ve had in your stash for months? Here’s the answer!" Yes, perfect. ;p I have a skein of green-yellow-blue shawl yarn from an indie dyer that is no longer in business, and I've been trying to find the perfect project for it. This looks right.

Ooh, that's a very cute scarf! And the shawl looks lovely. ♥

I'm glad the crochet-learning is going well - good luck!

That sounds like a deliciously cosy scarf when the weather cools again!

I've tried to teach myself to crochet multiple times, and for the life of me, I can never get further than making a simple chain. I can knit complicated lace until the cows come home, but I can't seem to master even the basics when it comes to crocheting!

I guess in fairness, when I was first trying to learn how to knit, the most sense I could make out of the instructions was, "Wrap the yarn around the needles and go f*** yourself!" because I just wasn't getting it! XD Took a while for things to click.
