Pride YMM
I went to the opening ceremony for Pride Week this afternoon.
It was a lot smaller than most of the other pride events I've been to - probably because this particular thing was a more formal affair, and it's been cloudy and cold and threatening to rain, so the weather didn't help. But maybe 60-75 people showed up, so that's pretty good.
The previous provincial government was working on banning conversion therapy in Alberta, but when the new government came in, they scrapped that project, so it's still legal. Today, our mayor announced that, on suggestion and advice from Pride YMM, in the next quarter, he's going to put forth a motion to ban conversion therapy at the municipal level.
Though it's going to be proposed, it might not necessarily actually pass. But it means a lot to me that he's willing to work with Pride YMM on this, and I'm optimistic about it. It does sound like it'll be banned here in the near future. Not sure if other municipalities in Alberta are doing the same thing, but now I'm curious - going to have to look this up.
I'm really glad that I decided to go out to this today. :)
