My big fat Scandinavian films list

I was talking with Flowers about Scandinavian film/tv and whatnot, and somewhere along the line we decided to exchange watched/to-watch lists. So, here is that, then.

I've been very slowly making my way through all files that I downloaded, so there's more on the "watched" than the "unwatched" now. I tend to pick up things that are either recommended or just... indiscriminately taking whatever came up while searching for Scandinavian films, so it's a mix of "quite good" and "quite... not great", haha.

But hey, if anyone has ideas of Norwegian/Swedish/Danish films or series that I might like, I'd love to hear it... Norwegian stuff is doubly loved because I am still trying to learn that language. I'm just, uh, very slow at it.

Watched:
*De dødes tjern/Lake of the Dead [Norwegian. Ghost story. Very enjoyable. Has become one of my go-to movies when I want to watch something calming.]
*Dead Snow/Død snø [Norwegian. Zombie movie. The only zombie movie that I can watch without having nightmares. Quite good - if you like that kind of thing.]
*The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo/Män som hatar kvinnor [Swedish. Crime story - well, everyone knows this one. Better than the novel because it cuts out a lot of the tedious tl;dr]
*Let the Right One In/Låt den rätte komma in [Swedish. Vampire film, very enjoyable. As good as the novel.]
*Princess (2006) [Danish. Partly animated and partly not, but definitely 18+... Guy seeks revenge for the death of his porn star sister - with the help of his neice. Kind of disturbing; I wouldn't watch it again.]
*Flammen & Citronen/Flame and Citron [Danish. Film about the Occupation and two members of the Resistance. A tad violent, but amazing. Loved it so much that I went ahead and bought it.]
*Mannen som elsket Yngve [Norwegian. Guy falling in love with his (male) friend. Watched it with Norwegian subs so I wasn't able to get as much out of it as I would have liked, but still found it enjoyable.]
*Sammen (2009) [Norwegian. Man dealing with the death of his wife and having to look after his son. Not bad, but not great. I found it hard to get through.]
*5 Løgner [Norwegian. I don't remember anything about this film. Take from that what you will.]
*Mumin series [Swedish version. Actually not through all of it yet... but most of it. Watching it raw so there are some parts that leave me going ????]

Haven't watched yet:
*Anno 1790. [Swedish. Historical crime series. Lakonisk says that it's awesome. Looking forward to it <3 ]
*Trolljegeren/Troll Hunter [Norwegian. Film is what it says on the tin, I think. I hear it's good!]
*Reprise (2006) [Norwegian. I have no idea what it is about but it was highly recommended on fail_fandomanon]
*Fritt vilt [Norwegian. Horror film. I don't know anything else about it.]
*Ni liv/Nine Lives (1957) [Norwegian. Takes place during WWII. About Jan Baalsrud's escape to Sweden. I'm looking forward to this one.]
*Ungen (1938) [Norwegian. Don't know anything else about it. But it's subtitled so at least I'll be able to follow it, haha.]
*Snapphanar [Swedish. 3-part miniseries about a peasant rebel movement in 17th-century Scania. I hear it's very historically inaccurate, but it might be entertaining :Va]

Ooh, I might steal some of these to watch, myself. ...And that reminds me I still need to clear up some space for all the Moomin episodes. =3=

Hmm, the only Swedish Swedish film I have is Patrik, Age 1.5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrik,_Age_1.5). I dunno if you'd like this one. I think it's mostly pretty cute/funny, especially if you catch the Swedish jokes, but I think some parts can be pretty annoying too.

Not sure if they count as Scandinavian since they're directed by a Finn, but there were some film recs floating around tumblr a while back and a couple were (mostly) in Swedish. I thought Elina: Som om jag inte fanns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elina:_As_If_I_Wasn%27t_There) was pretty good. I haven't seen Äideistä parhain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_of_Mine_(film)) yet even though I have it, but it's by the same director. They both deal a little with the Finnish language in Sweden, so there is of course a little Finnish mixed in, but they're mostly in Swedish.

Oh, and if you aren't including them with Män som hatar kvinnor, there's a film for each of the Millennium books if you haven't seen the sequels yet. I can't say if they're any good or not, because I didn't dare to watch them after barely making it through the first one. /3\

Here's a list of a few Scandinavian tv series

I'm currently watching a norwegian/american series called Lilyhammer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilyhammer). It is about a New York gangster starting a new life in Norway and all the hijinks that causes. It's mostly about cultural clashes. And the main character makes the best annoyed faces!

A good danish series is Riget (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riget). It's one of my favorite tv shows of all time; despite that it ends with a cliffhanger. It's about a lady who discovers the ghost of a dead girl in a hospital. There are a lot of great minor characters that pop up; such as a swedish Doctor who is the most hilarious character in the series. Every episode ends with him crying out his hate and rage at Denmark.

Unfortunately, I'm not that much into swedish tv series (mainly because the majority of them are soap operas), but here's a series I'm interested in watching right now. It's a science fiction series called Äkta Människor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%84kta_m%C3%A4nniskor). I don't know much about it, but a lot of my friends have seen it and liked it.

"Fritt vilt" has a sequel and a prequel.
"Cold Prey" are the English titles.
Kinda funny...I like them

"Villmark" is another rather creepy horror movie from Norway and worth a watch if you like it (it has two endings so you can choose how supernatural you want it)

"Kongen av Bastøy" is also pretty good and based on true stories.

If you liked the Danish resistance movie you'd probably like "Max Manus"

the original movie "insomnia" could also be fun for you to check out. america made a re-make of it, but you should be able to find the original

(Troll hunter is fucking epic. watch it dude. watch it)

I've not seen "Thale" yet myself...but it's horror/mythology with a huldra so I imagine it will be epic

you need to watch "Pinchcliffe Grand Prix".
Everyone and their Grandma has seen it in Norway and it's almost part of our culture.

"Ulve sommer" is a movie I remember watching as a teen...and my friends still insists I look/looked like the main character. the idea is hilarious to me for so many reasons.

"Sophie's world" is another one I highly recommend if you like philosophy and history. The book it's based on is one of my all time favourites.

(essentially this list has a lot of movies you should watch:

I've been trying to find a copy of Jul i Valhal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jul_i_Valhal) that I could understand for years but I haven't had much luck. Maybe you'll have more luck, seeing as you might not need the subtitles to be in English.
