Man, watching people try to push Linux on someone who is Just Not Having It is always so awkward.

(This is referring to a conversation I saw on Tumblr - won't link because honestly, the specifics aren't really necessary.)

Like... I do use Linux. I love the little netbook I have with Mint installed on it. It's great. But for a lot of people, it isn't the best solution. They want something that'll work out of the box with 0 tinkering, or they need software that doesn't work on Linux (or maybe they need a program that'll technically run with WINE but not very well), or - etc etc etc. You get the idea.

My experience with Mint so far has been good, but I also haven't run into any troubles (aside from some tricky bits at the beginning when I was still figuring stuff out). If it was a more complicated distro, who knows. Installing Mint pushed me to like, the very edge of my abilities. Which, considering it has a reputation as one of the more beginner-friendly distros, well....

Also: My Linux install is on my travel computer. This isn't my main machine. For my primary? Sorry man, but I am old and boring - I'm not going to use a system if I can't run my tax software on it. That's it.

So when I see someone pushing and pushing and pushing Linux at someone who's just looking for a system that they can do their work on, it's kind of exasperating. Yeah, it's great! It's not the best solution for everyone all the time, though!

Played around with my Linux computer a little this evening.

I successfully used the terminal to install GnuGo, then launched it via terminal and played a few 9x9 games. So very retro! - in a fun way.

I then launched the Vim text editor and tried to write fic in it, which was also very retro, but in a way I would prefer not to revisit in the future. I did learn how to make it save text files and open existing ones, at least.

All things considered, this is probably a good illustration of my general priorities. xD

Linux adventures

So, I took that old secondhand netbook, and I put Linux on it. Success!

Misc x3

+ Editing is such a process. Sometimes I want to go full medieval and throw all punctuation out the window. Commas? Never heard of 'em!

+ I have a secondhand computer that I'm thinking of switching over to Linux. I've never actually used Linux before, and since I don't know anyone IRL who does, I'd have to figure everything out myself, but... it might be an interesting experiment. And to be quite honest, I'm getting very sick of Microsoft.

+ So I just saw the trailer for Margrete den første/Margaret Queen of the North. This was the first I'd heard of this film, but man, am I ever interested. Politicking and conspiracies and medieval settings, whoo! I haven't seen Trine Dyrholm in anything else, but even just in the trailer I'm finding her very compelling as Margaret of Denmark. Sooo even though it'll be quite a wait before I can see it, I'm looking forward to this.
