Hmm, I don't think knowing it is necessary. Like, having read the Kalevala might make the experience richer, because you'd get the references. But myself, I barely remember anything from it, and enjoyed the comic plenty, so... it definitely isn't necessary. The story itself is a very standard "hero goes to the underworld and does stuff there" narrative, and any Finnish-specific stuff is explained pretty well in the text, I think.
