+ I took some time to read fanfiction this weekend. It's not something that I normally have time to do. On the one hand, I probably could have done something else - there are Tasks that went unfinished - but on the other hand... I'm feeling weirdly inspired to work on my own projects after experiencing someone else's enthusiasm about something they enjoy. That's always nice.

+ Speaking of which, it only just occurred to me, after reading the aforementioned fic, that Project Hail Mary is a good fandom for gen. And this makes me think I should go poking around in it more. Though my own fic output is the exact opposite, I really do appreciate a well-executed genfic. Will have to put this on the to-do list. Among many other things.

+ My fic for FTH is coming along. And considering everything, I think I might do my best to work on it in the evenings in the upcoming months. With the summer weather coming - it was +25C the other day - it's getting to that unpleasant point where electronics are throwing too much heat. Better for me to limit that, and spend time working with pen and paper instead. We'll see. Depends on whether I can get my brain in the right mode, I guess.

comments

Here, have a Project Hail Mary fic rec: Without a Doubt by Voidknight.

Grace & Rocky gen, 18k. A very fun exploration of Eridian languages, linguistics, and culture. I thought that the author did a really good job of illustrating the dynamic between Grace and Rocky. Also, their worldbuilding ideas about Eridian grammar were really interesting!

Definitely worth a look; I'm really glad I took a moment to read it - it was a really fun time.

The author's summary is an excerpt from the first chapter:

Petulantly, Rocky says, “Grace sound stupid. Like child.”

“I’m just talking how you talk, buddy.”

“Yes. This is because I talk like child, to speak to stupid human.”

“Well, you don’t have to do that,” I say without thinking.

“♪♫♩as this♪ when, underst♪♪♫d ♪me, question?” Rocky says.

“What?”

“Can♪♪♫will understa♫d it ♫think talks♫♪ as this♪ Eridian you♩♫, question?”

comments

It's nice to have a 4-day weekend (Monday is a stat).

+ Managed to finish the draft for the fic I'm working on for Crack the WIP! ...Still need to do a lot of work mind you, but The End Is In Sight. For a while there I was totally hating this fic, but after putting it away for a month I'm at the "huh, it's not that bad" stage.

+ Worked on my FTH fic today. Not sure when it'll get finished but it's moving along. I'm starting to hope that Pru is becoming easier for me to write. If this story works out (which, well, it has to, because FTH) then I might, at some point, be able to finish the other fics I started with him and never finished. Haven't transferred over my documents and whatnot yet, but at least the important stuff is done. It's smaller than my previous laptop and lacks some of the features, but I guess I can work with this. I had to go into the terminal while setting it up in order to force it to create a local account, but hey, I did it! :V Also I found my original disc for Paint Shop Pro 7, and it seems to have installed okay.

+ I'm still going to try to install a new hard drive on the old computer.
Elections leak scandal: Alberta politics trashfire

A very serious issue has come up in Alberta recently and I'm still trying to get my head around what in the ever-loving fuck is going on.

Essentially, the entire provincial voter list was leaked to the public, including names, addresses, phone numbers, etc.

Direct quote from CBC article describing what happened:

Last week, millions of Albertans learned personal information like their full names, addresses and contact information were made available in a searchable database posted by separatist group the Centurion Project.
The list was legally obtained from Elections Alberta by the Alberta Republican Party. However that information is not to be shared with third parties, and it remains unclear how it ended up in the hands of the Centurion Project.

Basically, political parties receive the voter list as a matter of course, so they can use it for reaching out to the populace. (This explains why I occasionally get texts from the UCP, even though I've never actively given them my information.) However, the separatist party, the Alberta Republican Party, apparently leaked the voter list to a separatist group.

Elections Alberta has made a news post about this: Message to Albertans from the Chief Electoral Officer re: Unauthorized Use of List of Electors. It outlines what happened. Apparently Elections Alberta is... looking in to it? But that doesn't change what happened. It should not have happened.

Edmonton city councilor Aaron Paquette made a post on the Edmonton subreddit expanding on some of the things stated in the Elections Alberta news post: An update on the Alberta Electoral List Scandal - and how you are affected. I appreciate that he emphasizes that the privacy concerns here are not abstract, that the searchable database is not "like an oldschool phone book" (as some people trying to downplay the issue are saying) and that vulnerable people such as those escaping domestic violence could be at risk because their addresses were exposed.

Furthermore, apparently journalist Jen Gerson informed Elections Alberta about the breach in March:

Jen Gerson, a journalist and political commentator who is the co-founder of The Line on Substack, said she wrote Elections Alberta on March 31 after a source contacted her about information on a website run by Alberta separatist group the Centurion Project that appeared to come from the provincial voters list.
On Thursday morning, officials with Elections Alberta appeared in an Edmonton courtroom where they successfully obtained a temporary injunction to force the Centurion Project into removing the voter information from its website. The group complied hours later.
Gerson said her source told her the information, which included the full names, addresses, contact information and electoral divisions of 2.9 million Albertans, was easy to access.
Gerson said she decided to alert Elections Alberta and not publish a story about what she had learned because of the sensitive nature of the information.

And in addition to this, the Separatists have apparently reached their required number of signatures on the petition to initiate a referendum on the separatism issue. The timing is suspicious. Elections Alberta currently has the petition on hold, for two reasons:
1. Firstly, there is a judicial review pending due to a lawsuit from the ACFN and the Blackfoot Confederacy. The verification can't start until the review is completed.
2. Elections Alberta "seeds" fake names in their election list in case of leaks like the one under discussion. If any fake names show up on the petition, then clearly the separatist petition is using leaked information and it will need to be subject to "further review".

The situation is still developing, obviously.

And here I am, sitting here and thinking... What now?

I'm not entirely surprised that the separatists pulled a stunt like this. However, the question is... what is going to happen next, and will anyone face consequences for this? The people who did this should absolutely get the book thrown at them, but I have no idea what that would entail or even what will happen next in general.

Also, I don't know if there is anything that ordinary Albertans can... do... about this. Aside from opposing both the separatist movement and the UCP (because the UCP and Danielle Smith in particular has allowed this bullshit to fester. And, knowing them, will continue to do so). But this is Alberta, so... uh. Hm.

What the ever-loving fuck is going on with my province, man? Seriously. wtf.

comments

Saturday:
- Went to a yoga class in the morning
- Went for a walk in the afternoon
- Went to Tim Hortons; it was kind of a zoo because they have their Smile Cookie promotion going on. Somehow I did not expect this. It was an experience much like Superstore on a Sunday afternoon and I kind of felt my soul leave my body.
- Took some books to the Little Library; didn't pick up any more while there, much to my relief
- Cooked some carrot and red lentil soup
- Finished reading Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. It was very good!! I've seen the film adaptation previously, but it's been a while plus the film is a very different setting, so it was fun to experience it almost-new.

Sunday:
- Cleaned my apartment
- Worked on my FTH fic with a friend
- Went to the Pride craft 'n chat. I was not the only person who showed up this time (hooray).
- Finished a watercolour painting while there, started another one also
- Picked up some books at the library that will theoretically help with my fic set in Berlin. Or possibly I will just end up plotting out a trip to Berlin and then not going there. (Similar has happened with other cities on other occasions, after all)
- Watched The Hit (1984). It's like, a combination of crime thriller and road trip movie? Kind of weird, but I liked it.
- Finally purchased a fucking computer, ugh and ew. I'm not remotely enthusiastic about this but it had to be done. As for the one that died, I do have a goal of replacing the drive and throwing Linux at it, but that will require research as I've never replaced a hard drive before and frankly right now I don't have the time or energy.

comments

My snake plant is blossoming and it smells amazing.

I've heard people compare the scent to Chanel Number 5, but I don't think that's it. I'd say it reminds me more of like, a cross between tuberose and designer baby powder, if there were such a thing. (Knowing humans, such a thing exists, but shh.)

It's the first time it's blossomed, and at first I didn't realize that's what it was. At first I thought it was just sending up another snake. So here we are.

It would be nice if it did grow more leaves, since right now it's a little lopsided, but I guess we'll see what happens later.

The other snake plant, the small one, has sent up several more leaves and expanded a bit. I kind of wish it had stayed as it was - it was previously very small, circular, and compact; it looked very nice. But at least it seems to be healthy and still has its defined streaks of yellow.

comments

+ The weather recently has been kind of awful. We had a ton of snow dumped on us on Friday and Saturday; a lot of people were stranded out on Highway 63, with blizzard conditions. The highway had to be shut down and everything. For those not familiar with my area, this is the long highway on the 5-hour drive between Edmonton and Fort McMurray. There is a 200-km stretch without any services at all, nothing but wilderness. So it's a pretty bad place to be stuck. ...Anyway, the weather in town has been fine, but the overall vibe has been kind of intense. Also, I think maybe people are on-edge because the 10-year anniversary of the Beast is coming up.

+ Went to a yoga class on Saturday; this was one in collaboration with the local Pride group. It's the second event I've gone to in two weeks where I was the only participant who showed up. On the one hand, by basically having a private class I can target my own goals. On the other, well... part of the reason I even go to pride stuff is so I can make an attempt at interacting with people socially. So, very mixed feelings. Hopefully once it gets warmer more people will be in the mood to go to things.

+ I've been working on my FTH fic and having a really good time with it. LT/Pru is very far outside my wheelhouse, and I kind of wonder what the recipient will actually think of this one... But I just keep telling myself that they were aware going in that I don't normally write these characters, so. I guess we'll both have to accept that I'll do my best and that'll be that. I've been using my fountain pen to write it and ngl that is great motivation to work on it. Yay purple ink.

+ Speaking of which I've decided to keep track of how many times I fill my Jinhao with the Iroshizuku ink. I've marked down the purchase date too. Basically what I want to do is figure out how long it'll take me to go through the 50ml bottle through normal use. I mean, on the one hand I do like the idea of trying a bunch of different inks, but on the other hand it's a pretty big bottle and it doesn't seem like it would be practical to have other inks if it takes forever to go through them. As for the Kaweco pen, I already know that it takes me about 2 months to go through 1 cartridge, so there's that (which means I currently own, uh, 4 years worth of cartridges, but let's not get into that).

comments

[Movies] Project Hail Mary

I've been waiting to see Project Hail Mary ever since news of the adaptation came out. I was so excited, I decided to not even look at the trailer.

Our cinema here in town was closed for several weeks, and I was worried that I wasn't going to get a chance to see it. Fortunately they reopened on the 10th, so here we are. Anyway.

The film was great! I really enjoyed it! Ryan Gosling was awesome as Dr. Grace! The scifi stuff was cool! And I'm really glad I got the chance to see this at the cinema because all of the Awesome Space Scenes are even cooler with the big screen.

I was a little unsure how this would even work as an adaptation. There are a lot of elements that are, uhhhh, kind of challenging to put on screen. However I think they did a pretty good job. By necessity a lot of stuff was cut and streamlined, but like... they had to cut a ton of stuff; it's a long movie as it is, there isn't room to stuff more in there.

On the upside, even though it's long, it didn't feel long. I felt the runtime was just right.

Then again, I do think some of the plot elements toward the end - bacterial mutations, fuel contamination, finding a solution and so on - went maybe a little too quick. But honestly, this is the kind of movie where stuff like that is hard to get perfect, because in terms of the span of time in the story, there is a lot of time where things wouldn't be happening, or things would be happening but only in the protagonist's head, or things are happening but the things happening are microbes reproducing, and so on. It's very hard to streamline scenes like that. So I'm not particularly fussed.

Also Ryan Gosling was pretty hot in this film and I like his fox sweater, it looks very cozy.

[Edit] Apparently a metric fuckton of this was practical effects; puppetry and such, no greenscreen. Hell yeah! I'll have to look for more info on that when I have a minute.

comments

Here is a list of some stuff I've been reading lately:

The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. True crime about the search for a serial killer who operated in Florence, Italy in the '70s and '80s. This case - or rather, the investigation - is absolutely batshit. And glancing at more recent developments, it managed to get even more batshit after this book was published.

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. About a pair of con artists in Dickensian England who set out to swindle some rich people. I'm not very far into it, but so far I'm really enjoying the story. I've already seen the Korean film adaptation, The Handmaiden, and really enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes.

Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It by Cory Doctorow. I'm only about 1/3 into this, but it's really interesting so far. It discusses a lot of stuff about the internet (and other things) that I've noticed and seen discussions about but never had laid out in such an approachable way. Like, the business practices always went over my head; why the hell would a company deliberately make their product worse, and how could making their product worse make the company more money? It still seems crazy to me, but at least I'm kind of grasping it now. The writer's style is very flippant, and that's kind of grating at times, but it's not a deal breaker.

Going to read next: Ladies in Hating by Alexandra Vasti, the f/f romance novel about two rival authors of gothic fiction. It's on one of the goodreads challenge lists, so I figured I might as well tackle it next.

comments

A new bookstore opened up here this weekend.

It's an independent bookstore specifically for romance novels.

I took a look while I was downtown. It's nice; a little small, but a decent selection given the space, and they do have room to expand the selection by switching up the layout a bit. Everything is divided up by subgenre (contemporary, sports, dark, etc).

Also, they do carry M/M and F/F romance, so there is that. It's mixed in with everything else, rather than having its own section; you'll have to look in the Sports section for your Heated Rivalry and so on. I kind of enjoy that, but I kind of don't; on the one hand, filing it by subgenre treats it the same as everything else. On the other hand, it makes browsing a little less efficient if I know that I want something gay but don't have any other parameters in mind.

I picked up a F/F regency while I was there; Ladies in Hating by Alexandra Vasti. Not sure if it'll be any good, but the premise sounds fun (the protagonists are rival authors of gothic fiction).

I'm a little unsure whether this place will actually be successful; Fort Mac is small, and I don't know if we have the base to sustain a regular indie bookstore, let alone one with a specific genre focus. But I hope it'll do well.

comments

Ma'am, I am still recovering from Easter break, give me a minute here.
I had a four-day weekend, but it was not restful at all. It was split between doing Chores/Tasks, and Familial Obligations. I made a cake over the course of two days. (It was a very good cake, will post about it later when I have a moment, but. Well. It was a very labour-intensive cake.)

Today I did my taxes and washed the car and got the second round of my hepatitis vaccine and did more chores.

Next weekend the parkade is getting cleaned, so on the Saturday everyone's vehicles have to be out from 8-6. Usually they do this on weekdays, but unfortunately not this time. I signed up for a workshop at the library that ends at 1; beyond that I don't know what I'll be doing. ...Maybe I'll just park my car at the grocery store, walk back to my place, and then go pick it up after the cleaning is done.

The local cinema has been closed for several months due to renovations. They're reopening soon and I will hopefully be able to catch Project Hail Mary, which I've wanted to see ever since I'd heard it was getting an adaptation. [/looks at schedule] ...Uhh. I'll have to squeeze it in somewhere.

I dropped off some novels at one of the Little Libraries. Currently I have a "2 out, 1 in" rule, because previously I was picking up too many things. In my defense, there were lots of good choices. ...Anyway I picked up Station Eleven and will hopefully read it some time in the next few months.

I have something going on every weekend this month, and it's all Fun Stuff That I Want To Do (coffee meetup, dance class, yoga class, etc) but also thinking about all of it kind of makes me feel tired.

comments

[Fountain pens] State of the collection

The new fountain pen that I'd ordered came in today, and I'm pretty happy with it!

It's a Jinhao 82, medium nib, in light blue (very light blue; it's kind of a "snow blue", almost white). It came in this afternoon, and right away I cleaned it out and inked it up and started working on a fic. It writes very nicely! I was worried the medium nib would be a bit too fat; the lines are slightly thicker than my other pen but not bad. I also tried underwriting a bit, and that looks good too.

Weight is about 20g with cap; 12g without cap/unposted. The only other pens I've tried so far are my Kaweco Sport (12g) and a borrowed Pilot Metropolitan (26g). I found the Metropolitan much too heavy and uncomfortable for me to use it much at all, and the Kaweco is too small for extended writing, but so far the Jinhao is perfect for what I want it to do. The balance is quite nice.

The twist converter is much more to my taste than the squeeze converter on the Metropolitan that I borrowed, as well. As for the Kaweco sport - I've opted not to get a converter for that one, because the capacity is very small. I'm sticking with cartridges on that one for now and will probably refill them eventually.

I've inked it with Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki-Shikibu, a lovely purple ink. I picked it up when I was in Edmonton as there isn't anywhere in town that sells ink. It's really nice, good dry time; I haven't had any issues with smudging so far (a concern for me as a left-hander). Might pick up other Iroshizuku ink in the future, though I'll stick with this one for now.

The reason I decided to go with the Jinhao 82 is because they're a very similar style to the Sailor Pro Gear Slim. I really like the look of the PGS, but since there isn't anywhere in town to buy one in person (thus check the feel of it and maybe even try it out), it made sense to get a Jinhao as they're very budget-friendly. I'm really happy with it so far. It's still possible that I might get myself a PGS in the future; there is an Occasion coming up that might be a suitable situation to get myself a Fancy Pen. But I will have to think about it for a bit as the PGS is the very opposite of budget-friendly.

Originally, I'd planned to take the Jinhao to work, but on second thought, I'm going to keep it at home. I've started working on a fic with it, so I might as well keep it where the Fic Things Happen. Maybe the Kaweco will go to work instead - it might be more suitable for that, anyway, as I do lots of writing but only in small amounts at a time.

Current inventory:
+ Jinhao 82 - light blue + silver trim, medium nib, converter
+ Kaweco Sport Classic - green, medium nib, cartridge only
+ 1 Pilot Iroshizuku Ink - murasaki-shikibu/medium purple, 50ml
+ 4 packages Kaweco cartridges: Palm Green, Royal Blue, Caramel Brown, Summer Purple.

comments

Still in the process of deciding what to do with my computer - the one whose hard drive died earlier in the week. (Well, I'm pretty sure it's dead.)

If I do end up getting something entirely new, I'm not sure what kind of specifications I should look for. Typically I get the most beefed-up laptop that I can afford and then run it until it dies. This previous one lasted seven years, and the one before that lasted ten and a half. So, I guess you could say I had expected to get about three more years out of this thing. (And it was running totally fine until a few days ago!)

...Come to think of it, if I just replace the hard drive, I'll also have to do research on that because it's not like you can just buy any old drive and plop it in and expect it to work, right? It's never that simple. :Va

Right now I'm using the small notebook with Linux Mint installed on it, the one I use for travel.
Today was day 2 of Edmonton - or rather the only actual day in the city, since I'm going home in the morning.

The weather was even more miserable than yesterday; tons of snow, very cold. Eew.

I headed out early to a cafe so I could have a coffee and write fic, then headed to the bookstore after that to poke around a little and kill time. Then I hopped the bus to go to the Art Gallery of Alberta.

All of the exhibits have changed since I was last there, so that was neat. The work that made the biggest impression was a series of sculptures made of very delicate materials, like paper and heads of wheat, strung together with wires and fishing line and suspended from the ceiling. Do I understand it? Nah. Was it interesting to look at? Sure bet.

As for this evening, and the reason I'm here in the first place... the concert! That is, The Goo Goo Dolls with Dashboard Confessional.

I'm not very familiar with Dashboard Confessional at all; the only song that I recognized from their set was "Hands Down". But their style in general took me back to a very specific time, and not going to lie, I kind of dig it. Might need to look up more of their work later.

The Goo Goo Dolls were awesome! It's been a while since I've listened to them, so I wasn't familiar with their newer work, but it was all good, and they played a ton of the classics. Loved it when they played "Black Balloon", that's always a good one. The energy was really awesome, and I'm so glad I opted to come.

And of course, the crowd went nuts when they played "Iris". Naturally.

These guys are like... Even though I haven't put one of their albums in my CD player in a while, I still really really like their music. It's partially nostalgia, sure - takes me to a version of myself that I'm still trying to get back to - but also I think a lot of their work is genuinely good. If I had to make a list of bands whose work was important to me, The Goo Goo Dolls would probably be on it, right up there with Our Lady Peace.

I can't really think of anything else to say at the moment, except that I'm really happy that I took the time to come down here for this. So, I'll just copy over the setlist. Maybe when I have some time later, I'll look up the songs that are new to me.
( Setlist )

comments

I spent the day on the bus, and now I'm in Edmonton.

The weather is pretty miserable; very chilly and kind of windy, and also it's snowing. But the ride down was fine. I did some thinking about my FTH fic and I might start working on it after breakfast tomorrow.

I managed to do two things today.

First, I headed over to the Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts. They have an art gallery/craft store that also sells pysanky supplies. I forget to buy dye pretty much every year, so I figured that I might as well pick some up in person. Anyway, I now have enough for this year and the next. (Not sure if I'll do any this year - I haven't blown out any shells - but there's still time.)

Then later this evening, I headed over to a poetry reading/book launch at Audrey's Books. It was for the poetry collection The Red We Silk by Nicole Lachat. It's been ages since I've been to something like this, and it was really nice! The work was pretty good too - some really nice imagery in this poet's stuff. I ended up picking up a copy, since I've been meaning to read more poetry anyway.

Ah, and I did some watercolour sketching when I went back to the hotel, too. I'd wanted to bring my fountain pen, so I put it in its tin, but the tin is also a watercolour set, so I figured I might as well bring some watercolour paper, annnnd yeah. I want to do that kind of thing more often, watercolour sketches of random objects (partially so I can get better at working with the particular colours in this set). So I'm glad I did that today.

Tomorrow will be the Art Gallery of Alberta and maybe a few other things. And the concert that I'm here for, of course.

comments

Whew. So, my main computer keeps throwing up a bluescreen error. As soon as I get past the load screen, it leads me to that. Plus stop code 0x00021a.

A cursory search tells me that this is, uh, Not Great.

I've done some poking around, but I think for now I'll just leave this problem for... later.

I sure wasn't looking for a Project, but I guess I have one now. :Va

comments

+ Work was nuts today; a really gnarly assignment crossed my desk and I'm like, ew. This one is going to be such a pain. (But I will manage.)

+ Going to Edmonton next week for a concert. Looking forward to it! Feels kind of silly to be away for three days, two of which will be spent on a bus, but I suppose a lot of people drive down to there for just one day in a similar way, so.

+ Received my FTH assignment. This one is going to be challenging, but interesting. I will need to do canon review and probably also some research. Hmm. (It's Hetalia, Liet/Pru.) Maybe I can make some notes while on the bus?

+ I'm going to Winnipeg in October to see Sabaton perform! *_* I was supposed to see them in Edmonton several years ago, but that trip never ended up happening. Anyway, the people I've mentioned the trip to generally react like "Eew, Winnipeg" but honestly, I'm pretty jazzed about it. Looking forward to the museums and art gallery and maybe also the zoo if I have time. Should be fun!

comments

So I found myself thinking that I should read more poetry. Because my writing is at its best when I'm regularly reading poetry.

The problem is that I don't actually enjoy most poetry. In most cases I can find myself appreciating it from a technical point of view at best, but the vast majority of stuff I pick up leaves me completely cold.

But I should probably read more of it. For, like, skills reasons.

This thought came to me while I was eating some beets. My doctor has informed me that I should eat more beets for health reasons. Like, beets specifically, above all other vegetables. And so, I am dutifully eating more beets in more things, even though I don't actually want to eat them that often.

I feel like there are some parallels here.

comments
