Reading Wednesday

Finished reading: Tea From An Empty Cup by Pat Cadigan. I think I said everything I had to say about it in the previous Reading Wednesday entry, which is - I didn't like it, unfortunately, and I can't really put my finger on why. But a lot of people did like it, so I guess it's just a matter of preference. I do recommend one of her other novels, though: Mindplayers. It's so good! I liked the central character a lot, and the world really interested me. What I would recommend is - if you're interested in going the ebook route, get the SF Gateway Omnibus with Mindplayers, Fools, and Tea From An Empty Cup. That way you can get kind of a broad look and form your own impressions.

Currently reading: The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. I'm currently only about 1/3rd of the way in, but I like it! This one has been for a while on the "Ehhh maybe I'll read it eventually" list, but then I came across an anon who is writing a Valdemar+TGE crossover, and... well. I just had to check it out. So - as I said, I like it so far. It's fun, it's kinda' sparkly, I enjoy Maia a lot - he's very sweet - and I like a lot of the secondary characters too. (Csevet!! And Beshelar and Cala!)

... The only thing is, I really wish I were reading from a paper copy rather than ebook, because it's tricky for me to keep some of the names straight because a lot of them start with the same letters, and I find it almost impossible to spell most of them. One wouldn't think this would be a problem even with ebook, but my ereader is extremely old and outdated and clunky to navigate/jump pages. ... Anyway. I think it'd mesh better for me on paper, as I'd be able to easily flip through if I'm confused about who so-and-so is.

I was really surprised to find out that the elves in this novel have airships. In fact I completely failed to absorb anything about the tech level of this novel through osmosis - I had the impression that it was a bit more Valdemar-esque, for some reason, and that's clearly wrong. Anyway, yay, airships! I like that. ALSO. There is a mystery plot! I don't know how significant it will become through the rest of the book, but I'm assuming that it will be because otherwise it wouldn't be there, and this pleases me. I like mysteries.

... Ignore those trying to recommend it on basis of court intrigue; it isn't really heavy on that. At least so far. In fact, I will admit, part of the reason I was kind of un-eager to read this novel was that certain subsets of its fandom are a little overzealous to recommend it on the basis of features that actually do not apply... At least, this is what I have seen from discussions. So, I was a bit "Hmmm" about it. Which is a little bit unfair, I suppose, but I'm enjoying it now.

Reading next: I have no idea. I kind of want to re-read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but I don't know if I want to cart that big fat heavy book around, and I don't know if I can force myself through pages and pages of Tedious Swedish Business Transactions again, even if I like the story itself a lot (this is one novel where the film - both versions! - actually improved it). Or maybe I should re-read the Last Herald-Mage trilogy? Except I can't remember where I put those novels, or even if I have all three of them. Or... Actually you know what, I'll probably just close my eyes and grab something, it isn't as if I don't have plenty of unread books floating around my room.

AHHH Himaruya updated his blog with a cute drawing of Nor and a few others... What a good way to start the morning.

Finished watching the American version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and man, do I ever have thoughts, though it might take me a while to put them together. I kind of wish that I had watched it shortly after I'd read the book, because then it would've been fresher in my mind, but oh well. I think at the time, I was busy being butthurt about how it was a completely unnecessary remake, and that the Swedish version was perfectly good.

... Which. Y'know. It is.

All aboard the wingnut express

This weekend was... uh. Well, it wasn't completely unproductive, and I got done some things that I'd been meaning to do, though not half as much as I would have liked, but overall it wasn't too bad.

I had hoped that my fic would be done in time to post directly after posting opens for the SveFin fest, but I don't think I'll be finished by then. Oh well, I still have plenty of time to get it done before posting closes.

I saw the announcement for the Hetalia rarepair exchange... I want to do it, but I'm already doing an exchange. Plus the two fests I signed up for. So it's probably best if I don't. If I can get the three things I'm in knocked out of the way, I can put something together that isn't for a fest/exchange, hopefully.

Started watching the American remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo today. Not finished yet - I'm about 2/5ths in - but I'll watch the rest tonight. There are few novels where I can confidently say "the film was better than the book", but with the Millennium films, I am definitely willing to say that (even when it comes to this one, which I haven't finished watching yet). The novels suffer so much from tl;dr syndrome, and even though I found them hard to put down, they still needed so much trimmed out. Seriously. The story flows so much better when it's visual.

So I heard you like wurst

So, my first fic for Nordipalooza is done. It's some PWP DenSve that reads like a kink meme fill. I could probably do better, but honestly? I don't care. xD (LJ or DW)

Will work on the other thing I'm writing for it... tomorrow. Part of me wants to give up, since I've already met the fest requirements, but eh. Might as well try anyway.

Eurovision is tomorrow! I'm very excited!! I've been waiting all week for this!!! It requires copious amounts of exclamation points!!!! Haha, really though, I have been looking forward to it all week. It's frustrating that I couldn't watch the semifinals, but at least there is the final. I haven't heard most of the songs yet either. Well, I looked up Norway's, since everyone on my twitterfeed was saying that it's a spectacular snoozer. And... it is. It really, really is. As far as Eurovision goes. But as a song in and of itself? I love it! It's so pretty!

... Also looked up Austria's, since I was confused about all the bathtub jokes. Now I get it. I like that one too, heh.

Anyway. It's still really cold, and I'm not happy. It hasn't gotten very far above 10C (or even 5C) and it's been snowing off and on all week. This isn't normal for my location at this time of year, and I'm starting to get very concerned.

Finished reading Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander this week. I love it! It's precisely the kind of book I was expecting it to be. Seafaring and adventure and whatnot. I just wish I'd become aware of the series earlier... there's so much in it that appeals to me. And honestly, I wish I could write that kind of thing. Well - I guess what I have to do is start with the research, and the rest will follow. Like anything else. In the meantime, there are a bunch of other books in the series to read, so I'll be at it a while. I've ordered the second novel and I look forward to it.

So about those guilty pleasures

Oh snap, in a few days we're leaving for more travelling. PRETTY EXCITED but also kind of nervous. Even though I'm now acquainted with the people I'll be travelling with, it still seems kind of -- ehhh, I dunno'. Just a little bit scary! And the thought of hopping countries the way one would hop small eastern Canadian provinces just blows my mind. Anyway. Stockholm is still lovely, though it's a bit grey today. Well, that's fine with me.

Last night I finally finished the last Millennium novel after waiting ages and ages for it to come out in paperback in Canada. Now I'm left with that "I don't know what to do now" feeling.

Somehow this got all tl;dr on me, wtf )

Ding dong, Christmas bells ringing on the radio~ ♪ ♫ ♪

Oh man. Getting coffee as a surprise in the mail is the best thing ever. Thank you again, Ardis. <3 Now, let's just hope my parents don't drink all of it before I get a taste. That's what happened the last time I had special coffee. :|

The last week has been so busy! Work has been frustrating as hell - I feel like a chicken running around with its head cut off. The store is crazy-busy due to people coming in to buy things for last-minute Christmas parties. If only they'd plan ahead.

Of course, when I'm working so much, that would be the time I get so much inspiration to write! It makes perfect sense! Argh, I have a million stories running through my brain right now, but I'm not going to have a moment's rest or any time to think until about January 01, I expect. Woe is me. ... Though I actually did manage to get about half a page written on one of my Swe/Fin stories the other day, so all isn't lost.

I've been working on the revamp of the Baltic Index off-and-on, whenever I get a tiny bit of time. It's going slowly. Mostly I'm indexing the latest Part + unfilled requests (beginning with Est, as he has the fewest). Then I'll move on to the fills and filled requests. The new Baltic Index is here, and as y'can see, it looks pretty much the same as my Nordic Index.

Anyway. I finished reading World War Z. I... enjoyed it. Mostly. Though I did find it disturbing. I still haven't been able to quite put my finger on what I find so utterly terrifying about contagion, zombies, and end-of-the-world scenarios, but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. I'll probably read one of the Moomins books next as a palate cleanser. When Diplopod sent me that box of books, I probably could have read them all in succession, but I'm rather glad that I decided to (mostly) keep them reserve to follow whenever I read something disturbing. Come to think of it, I still haven't finished watching the series, either... I've kind of slowed down with it because I have more difficulty paying attention to the raw episodes, on account of it being harder to figure out what's going on.

... I think that's it for now. There are a few things that I had considered discussing, but after thinking about it, writing about those problems won't make me feel any better, so there we are.

[eta] OH. ALSO. I was playing the harmonica this evening, and I finally managed to do a recording of The Highwaymen's "Rover" without making any mistakes! Yes. I'm so proud of myself.

Yes, I would like some cheese with my whine

I have had a headache all day. ALL. DAY. AND I STILL HAVE IT.

So I've been mopey and grumpy and arrrgh. And it certainly doesn't help that I wasn't able to do the things I wanted - couldn't practice harmonica because there were people around, couldn't study French because my head hurt too much, couldn't go out because it's TOO FREAKING COLD.

... Okay, okay, it isn't that cold, but it's enough that I didn't want to go out. Anyway.

Eventually I just gave up on getting anything done and sat around watching Moomins. Which is, y'know, awesome because it's Moomins. But STILL. On the other hand I keep trying to think of ideas for, er, a certain project, and it involves that, so I might as well do it, and... yeah, shan't say anything more.

I guess sitting around watching it wasn't so bad though. At least while I'm watching things, I can work on Christmas presents! I can't watch television or movies unless I'm also doing something with my hands - I just don't have the attention span. (Going to the cinema, while I love to do it, tends to be rather frustrating. I get so fidgety). So... I worked on that. And I'm almost finished with knitting the first present! Which is great because the cut-off date is edging kind of close and I sort of need to start working on the second thing right away, ahhhh.

This reminds me that we got a sheet in the mail the other day from Canada Post, stating the dates that packages need to be sent out in order for them to arrive on time. I only have until Nov 29th to get everything packaged up and shipped out, sob. Fortunately the deadline for letters will be a bit longer (I think). I don't think I'll be able to get all those cards done up by the 29th, ahhhh.

I expect this season will involve a lot of me running around screaming and sobbing about how I won't be able to get everything done in time. :| fgasdjkfh it's not even my holiday, really - I don't know why I get so worked up over having an excuse to give people stuff. (I suppose it's mostly because everything has to be JUST RIGHT, and if it isn't, I get upset.)

MAN. Am I ever looking forward to being done with all of the above, though. People keep giving me ideas for writing and I can't write anything until it's all done. :|

ETA and/or PS: Hey y'all, none of you go believing anything that [livejournal.com profile] noonish says. I am NOT a dirty old man! :|

Moomins Pixiv Taglist

I haven't really found an easy-to-navigate tag list for Moomins fanart on Pixiv anywhere. So, I'm going to put together my own.

The main ones are here. I'll add more minor ones when I come across them.
